@PowerlineFW

I own three WPA8630 v1 devices. I also purchased one 8630P v2 and V2.1 to help an OpenWRT developer add support for them into OpenWRT. I have since sold the v2 and v2.1 because they have less flash available for OpenWRT and also the 2.4GHZ radio only goes to 20dbm instead of 22dbm of the 8630 V1.

Anyway I build my own firmware, I don't use the ones provided by the automated build system of the OpenWRT project. As such, I compile in all the packages I want and every time I want to upgrade the version I just pull the latest master repository and compile it.

Building your own image is very easy, if you have time you have to try it :)

@PowerlineFW

Where can I download this latest FW version?  When I go to TP Link supportpage for my product PA8030P the only firmware version shown is TL-PA8030P KIT(US)_V2_170704.

Thanks

@JohnCW

Just combine the pib file in the zip firmware of the tp-link website with the nvm from the link above in tp-link tpPLC tool for flashing. In your case when in the US you take the zip firmware file with US in the name and for EU with EU in the name.

@PowerlineFW You say "This is an official public available firmware." but you are linking to it from mega.nz. Can you point to where it is officially available?

I very much doubt TP-Link would make availble tested firmware for public consumption through mega.nz, and I don't want to brick or compromise my network equipment.

Decide as you wish. I do not make advertising of other power line selling manufacturers. It is the general nvm file without the special adapted pib file of this manufacturer. Maybe you find out which manufacturer offers this firmware version. Many others did flash sucessful, its up to everyone.

@PowerlineFW could you give a bit more info, since you seem to know a bit about Powerline networking from your previous posts - but installing some firmware from an anonymous online locker on the advise of a stranger in a public internet forum still feels risky.

This is a very interesting post for all the ppl stuck with the 2.2.3 version (and related issues).

Anyway, making public the name of the other vendor could allow everyone to self evaluate if is worth to take the risk or not.

I don't think it's a matter of supporting or not another company, it's just a matter of "transparency".

Thanks!

 Max

ps.

 It's very sad that there are no TP-Link feedback or interest in supporting people trying to help other ppl, nor even giving just a comment on the thread.

@PowerlineFW thank you for doing what is supposed to be TP-LINK's job.

To everyone that is looking for a way to improve their Powerline device performance, here are some facts that you may want to know:

FACTS:

 - Qualcomm is the manufacturer of some of the PLC ( powerline ) chipsets that TP-LINK uses on it's devices

 - Qualcomm supplies manufacturers with firmware updates so that they can provide updates to their customers devices

 - Firmware supplied by Qualcomm is the same for all manufacturers ( TPLINK, DEVOLO, LINKSYS, etc ).

 - There is no difference between a device manufactured by TPLINK or DEVOLO from a chipset or firmware point of view. The changes are essencialy cosmetic and in price.

 - Qualcomm QCA75XX chipsets are used in many TPLINK and other manufacturers devices.

 - Qualcomm has been suppling manufacturers with firmware updates on a regular basis for many years

 - Latest firmware version released to manufacturers by Qualcomm for the QCA75XX is now on version 2.8 ( released 2020 )

 - DEVOLO is one of the manufacturers that has already provided this update to their customers.

 - TPLINK is still using several years old firmware on their QCA75XX devices ( I believe 2.1 or 2.2 firmware version )

 Why is TPLINK not providing their customers with firmware updates that bring performance and stability improvements, along with other improvements to their customers?

 - Many possible reasons, my personal take is that their couldn't care less. They are not proud of what they manufacture and they don't care about their customers.

I own two TL-PA8010P V1.0 ( PLC only ) and two TL-PA8630 V1.0 ( PLC + WIFI ) . I have upgraded all of them from the original 2.1 or 2.2 PLC firmware to 2.4 then 2.6 then 2.7 and finally to 2.8.

The performance and stability increased quite a lot. about 30% more sync speed and zero packet loss or drop in function.

Some notes:

The TL-PA8010P retains all its functionality available via the TpPLC utility ( change led status, power saving mode, etc )

The TL-PA8630 loses the following functionality ( led status cannot be changed, power saving mode cannot be disabled )

I belive that the TL-PA8630 loses these functions because I used the firmware for the TL-PA8010P to flash it. The one supplied for the TL-PA8630 fails to install ( without any problem to the device ).

Anyway, just clearing out things for anyone interested in knowing more.

I also have some TL-PA411 AV500 that were on TP-LINK original 1.1 firmware version. I have upgraded them to the 1.5 version supplied by Qualcomm to other manufacturers and it is now an AV600 device with perfect stability and much faster.

I tried the file from mega site referenced for PA8030 and combined with a pib file from tp-link site but the update failed.

What device are you trying to update, the PLC only or the PLC+WiFi device?

And what hardware versions are they?
