Model: RE650
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version:

I want to know if I have to best setup at my home. I want to connect to TP-Link RE650 to my router with WiFi. I don't have any ethernet cables from my router to the RE650, just Wifi.

Downstairs I have the router with the Wifi-name: 12345.

Upstairs I have the RE650 with the Wifi name: 12345_EXT_2.4G and 12345_EXT_5G.

Should I rename 12345_EXT_2.4G and 12345_EXT_5G to 12345? I want the people in my house not to switch as many times as possible. Does the RE650 then turns off the router Wifi-connections if I rename them to 12345, so that the RE650 is in lead?

@RobertDv

I personally run the setup you have now to avoid any issues such as devices jumping to a further connection while I'm close to one. However, it does require switching over.

In your case, you can name everything the same, but know that the extender nor the router will dictate to the device what wireless network device to connect to. It will fall upon the actual device itself on what to connect to.

The RE650 won't take lead as far as connection, your device will connect based on which ever threshold it has, be it signal strength or saved network.
