Tapo H500 not recognizing new HDD
Tapo H500 not recognizing new HDD

Hello,
I just purchased a brand new Seagate Enterprise 2TB 2.5 7200RPM SATA 6Gbps 128MB Cache ST2000NX0303 drive. I placed it into the hub and it's not recognized. I placed it on my computer and it recognized it fine. I decided to format it and then place back into the H500 and it's still not recognized.
I need careful step by step instructions on how to get this to work because your H500 hub has been nothing but frustration after frustration. Please give me a solution so I can finally have some peace.
Kind regards,

Restart the hub while the HDD is still installed, then check if it can be recognized. And pay attention to the changes in the LED light on the hard drive. If it does not display normally, refer to the hard drive manual to identify the current issue.
If the HDD still can't be recognized by the hub, we recommend getting a new hard drive from our tested compatibility list. Hard Drive Compatibility List for Tapo H500

Hello!
This was done prior to posting. It is not recognized in the hub. All 3 lights are lit when restarting the hub, then only the first 2 stay lit after it fully boots.
Kind regards,
Vigilence

What??? Buy a new drive from the list? Your amazon listing just says it works with 2.5 HDD and SSD drives. Not SOME drives, not a FEW drives, not SPECIFIC drives. I purchased your H500 in good faith thinking this was a normal product where drives just worked, not a delicate device where you guys don't even know what works or not.
I don't want to spend MORE money on getting a new drive. I want to use my perfectly new drive that fits the drive stats that you advertised. A 2.5" HDD drive that is under 16TB.
The copy on your amazon listing doesn't warn your customers that your H500 works with SOME specific HDD's or SSD's only.
It just states up to 16tb, 2.5" HDD or SDD format:

With numerous brands and models of hard drives available on the market, each varying in quality, compatibility issues are unavoidable. Choosing a hard drive model that has been tested is a good way to avoid this problem.
Given the current status of your case, I recommend reaching out to the support team to see if they can provide additional assistance in analyzing this issue. Send an email to forumsupport.usa@tp-link.com with the following information:

I agree, there are indeed numerous drives on the market and its not realistic to expect day one support for all of them. However, the H500 is a specific device designed for a specific need, 24/7 video recording. One would think that since Tapo designed the H500 for this in mind that they would at least test all the popular 24/7 HDD/SDD brands first, then all the other common drives. The fact this wasn't done tells me and others that Tapos R&D department didn't do a good job or didn't even have the budget to purchase one of each of these drives to test.
The H500 by default should support all of these drives:
- Seagate Exos
- Seagate SkyHawk
- Western Digital Purple
- Western Digital Purple Pro
- Western Digital Gold
- Toshiba S300
- Toshiba MG (MG series)
- HGST Ultrastar

Thanks for your input. However, it’s important to point out that the “list of drives that work” you mention is not actually included or linked anywhere in the official Amazon listing for the Tapo H500. Most users, including me, buy the product expecting it to support any 2.5" HDD or SSD up to 16TB, as advertised without having to hunt down separate compatibility sheets buried in community forums or support emails.
It’s not really about “crying or whining” but about clear communication from the manufacturer so customers can make informed decisions without wasting money or time guessing which hard drives will actually work. Expecting users to search for a hidden “approved” list after purchase is not practical or fair. Clear, upfront information is key to avoiding frustration for everyone.

I bought the H500 on Amazon too n came here cuz my drive wasn’t showin’ up n I wanted 2 check b4 returnin’ it and have been waiting to see what support comes up with in this post before returning. The hidden list’s only on the product FAQ/support pages of tapos site not on the Amazon page n most ppl just assume a brand-name thing like the H500’ll work outta the box.
Instead of actin’ smug, just say the list’s easy 2 miss n that the Amazon page don’t mention compatibility. tapo should tell ppl up front: check the supported-drive list it ain’t obvious that one even exists from the Amazon listing. Post that and it actually helps. Mockin’ someone for not knowin’ what’s hid on the support site just makes u look like a sad little jerk. 💩

Well, now you know to look for the compatibility of accessories before buying them. I admitted that I didn't read the list and had to return them. But, I didn't come here crying about it, and then, cry some more. 🫵🤣
