Extremely disappointed in RE220 Range Extender

Model: RE220
Hardware Version: V3
Firmware Version: 1.0.23 Build 230418 Rel.60395n (8583)

First of all, this was extraordinarily difficult to set up with an IP that fit my localnet.  Took three factory resets and reconfigurations before it worked.  (I am a computer programmer, and I know what I'm doing.)

Secondly, I bought this for one reason only.  I have a Netgear extender and for any device connected behind it, the Netgear reports the MAC address of the extender, not the MAC address of the device.  I asked Rufus (Amazon's smart assistant) specifically if the TPLink extender reported the MAC address of the device behind it, and Rufus assured me it did.  But the TPLink extender again reports its own MAC address instead of the MAC address of the device connected to it.  So, a complete waste of money for me since it performs no better than my existing Netgear.  Extremely disappointing!!!

  @hspindel Sorry that you were incorrectly informed that you could MAC filter through the RE220.

It seems for TP-Link that is limited to these models:  TL-WA860RE , TL-WA850RE , RE300 , RE190 , RE205 , RE750C , RE580D , RE590T , RE200 , RE210 , TL-WA854RE , TL-WA865RE

Here's the details on how to:

How to set up Mac Filtering on router to control the devices connected to the Range Extender(Green UI) | TP-Link

Cudy also makes range extenders that are capable of this...

  @jzchen

If you'll reread my post, you'll see it has nothing to do with MAC filtering.

  @hspindel I was surprised but what you describe seems normal for Range Extenders/Repeaters.  Cudy similarly assigns a "virtual" MAC address to clients connected to their Range Extenders.  You can set up "MAC Repeater" and it will assign partially derived virtual MAC to each device connected to it....

Rufus in this case goofused.

  @hspindel You need a Range Extender model that supports WPS mode, as of the following article dated 08/25/2025 these models:  TL-WA830RE_V1,V2/TL-WA730RE/TL-WA750RE

How to set up Mac Filtering on router to control the devices connected to the Range Extender(Green UI) | TP-Link

YES the article is about MAC filtering, BUT it explains that WDS passes the correct MAC for each device/client....
