Tapo S500 Switch randomly turns on or off
Monday
Model: Tapo S500
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.20 build 230906 rel.140001

I just installed a new S500 Tapo switch and connected it to Alexa. It is my first switch, and I have not programmed Alexa to do anything with it. It randomly turns on and off by itself.  It always works correctly when I use the switch. I never see the light it controls dim or flicker. I also have not programmed the Tapo app to do anything with it.  Any help would be appreciated.

Did you install it yourself or did you hire an electrician? Here is a list of trouble shooting steps you can take.

Tapo light switch turning on and off by itself is likely due to a setting in the Tapo app, a power fluctuation, a firmware update, or an issue with the wiring. To troubleshoot, first check the Tapo app for any schedules, timers, or automation routines, then look for a firmware update. If the issue continues, verify the wiring is correct and that there are no loose connections. If the problem persists, it may be a hardware failure with the switch itself.

Check app settings and firmware

  • Schedules and Automations: Open the Tapo app and check for any schedules, timers, or routines that might be causing the switch to turn on and off. Disable any that are not intended.
  • Firmware Update: Ensure your Tapo switch has the latest firmware. You can also disable automatic firmware updates, as a sudden update can cause a brief power cycle.
  • Default State After Power Outage: In the app, look for a setting that controls the switch's behavior after a power outage. You can set it to stay in its last state instead of defaulting to "on" or "off".

Inspect the wiring

  • Ensure Correct Wiring: Make sure all wires are connected to the correct terminals. A common issue is reversing the live and neutral wires.
  • Check Neutral Wire: Smart switches require a neutral wire to function. Verify that there is a neutral wire present and that it is correctly connected.
  • Look for Loose Connections: Power down the circuit at the breaker. Carefully inspect the wire connections at the switch to ensure they are tight and secure.

Consider other causes and next steps

  • Power Surges: Electrical surges can cause smart switches to malfunction. If you experience frequent surges, you may need a surge protector.
  • Hardware Failure: If none of the above steps work, the switch may have a hardware defect, such as a faulty capacitor, especially if it's an older device.
  • Factory Reset: As a last resort, you can try a factory reset by holding the power button for 10 seconds. This will erase all settings, and you will need to set it up again.
  • Contact Support: If the issue persists after trying all the steps, contact TP-Link support for assistance. The switch may be faulty and require replacement.
