What Is The DMZ Function?

There is a feature that is available in the router known as DMZ or Demilitarized Zone. What a DMZ does is it allows unrestricted communication from the designated LAN device to the internet. Typically, a computer that is located on the local network is secured behind the routers firewall. A drawback to this is seen when devices require data to be received such as a web server or video gaming.

Note: When DMZ is enabled, the DMZ host is completely exposed to the internet. Caution should be used when opting to do this as a device designated as the DMZ may be compromised.

For this example, due to some port restrictions on a certain video game, when playing online, you can log in normally but cannot join a lobby with other players. To solve this problem, set your PC as a DMZ host which will open all ports to prevent any issue resulting from restricted ports.

Before you start, assign a static IP address to your PC, for example 192.168.0.100. Then follow the steps below:

  1. Visit http://tplinkwifi.net, and log in with your TP-Link ID or the password you set for the router.
  2. Go to Advanced > NAT Forwarding > DMZ and select Enable DMZ.
  3. Enter the IP address 192.168.0.100 in the DMZ Host IP Address filed.
  4. Click Save.

In order to disable DMZ simply uncheck the “Enable DMZ” box, and select “Save” on the bottom right.
