Before You Begin:

  • Check compatibility: Not all Deco models support VPN. Verify your model’s features on TP-Link’s website.
  • Update firmware: Use the Deco app to ensure your system is running the latest firmware version. The latest features and VPN functionality, especially WireGuard, often require the most recent update.
  • Prepare VPN details: Obtain credentials from your VPN provider (for Client mode) or note your WAN IP/Dynamic DNS info (for Server mode).

VPN Modes on Deco Mesh Systems

  • VPN Server: Allows you to access your Deco network remotely. Supported types: PPTP, OpenVPN, WireGuard (select models).
  • VPN Client: Connects your Deco system (and specific devices you choose) to an external VPN provider. Supported types: PPTP/L2TP, OpenVPN, WireGuard (select models).

All configuration is handled conveniently and intuitively via the Deco App.

Configuring Deco as a VPN Server

  1. In the Deco app, go to More > Advanced > VPN > VPN Server > Add VPN Server
    • Note: We recommend enabling DDNS (Dynamic Domain Name System) to bind your WAN IP to a domain name. This can prevent issues with your WAN IP changing, which might otherwise cause VPN connection problems.
  2. Select your preferred VPN Server Configuration Type (OpenVPN, PPTP VPN, WireGuard VPN, L2TP/IPSec):
  3. Save the configuration and enable the connection.
  4. Assign devices: choose which Deco-connected devices should use the VPN tunnel. This allows split tunneling across your home network.

Configuring Deco as a VPN Client

  1. In the Deco app, go to More > Advanced > VPN > VPN Client.
  2. Tap Add VPN Server, choose from the Pre-Populated VPN Provider Options and Log In Using Your Existing Credentials, or use the Custom Option:
  3. Save the configuration and enable the connection.
  4. Assign devices: choose which Deco-connected devices should use the VPN tunnel. This allows split tunneling across your home network.

Note on WireGuard Support
WireGuard is currently supported on select Deco Mesh Systems running the latest firmware. Support is continually expanding to additional models over time. Always check the specifications and firmware release notes page for your Deco Mesh model on our official website.

With VPN support built into Deco Mesh systems, you can protect your internet traffic or securely access your home network from anywhere. Use VPN Server for remote access to your home network, or VPN Client to connect all (or selected) devices within your network through a third-party VPN provider. WireGuard offers a faster, modern alternative to OpenVPN and PPTP, combining security with efficiency. For best results, keep your Deco firmware updated and use strong authentication, such as 2FA: How to Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) in the Deco App
