Are there better ways of doing what I want? Mainly accessing files on my home network remotely. Install some software on my PC and an app my Android phone or othe PC/device?
Short answer, YES...
Long answer, it might not be 100% what you want or it might cost you some $$$$.
Remote access programs are what you want. You can transfer files both to and from a desktop. Run all sorts of things on your desktop like you were sitting there.
Here is a list of such programs, https://www.lifewire.com/free-remote-access-software-tools-2625161, and I have used some.
Free may not be the best choice. One I used produced a very small screen to work with. Some require the connected to system to have some settings made, and some do not allow unattended access.
TeaViewer is the one I like to use, both to assist friends who need some instruction/help (especially important to me with the Pandemic, and those not close by). Check this link out, https://lifehacker.com/use-your-computer-from-anywhere-a-guide-to-remote-cont-5902654. All you need do is run it on your LAN PC and copy down the UID and PW. Then from a remote location enter the UID and PW on the controlling PC and you will connect. You have all capabilities. I must tell you, TeamViewer has recently made it very difficult for 'free' usage. If they feel you are using it as a business they will lock you out until you buy a license. If you are lucky you can get the free usage back after appealing the lock-out.
There are other 'paid' ones too that will offer 'free' versions or Private, non-business use as well.
Windows for instance has a Remote Access built-in, https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/how-to-use-remote-desktop-5fe128d5-8fb1-7a23-3b8a-41e636865e8c
Others I've tried, AnyDesk, Remote Desktop, Quick Assist, and Chrome Remote Desktop, all work, but may not support unattended access? TeamViewer is my go to.
