Hi everyone,

I have a fiber internet connection and a ZNID-GPON-2428B1 router provided by my ISP. I’m setting up four Deco XE75 units along with an unmanaged switch, and I want to optimize my network for best performance and avoid bottlenecks. I'm considering using Router mode or AP mode for the Deco XE75, depending on the setup.

Here are two possible setups I'm considering:

Setup 1 (Deco in AP Mode):

  • Wire 1: Router → Main Deco XE75
  • Wire 2: Router → Unmanaged Switch
  • Wire 3, 4, 5, 6: Switch → Other Deco XE75 units (for Ethernet backhaul)

Setup 2 (Deco in Router Mode):

  • Wire 1: Router → Main Deco XE75
  • Wire 2: Main Deco XE75 → Unmanaged Switch
  • Wire 3, 4, 5, 6: Switch → Other Deco XE75 units (for Ethernet backhaul)

My Questions:

  1. Which setup is better for performance and reducing bottlenecks?
  2. Are there any potential issues with either setup, considering my fiber connection and router model (ZNID-GPON-2428B1)?
  3. Does the Deco XE75 handle routing better than my ZNID-GPON router, or should I leave it in AP mode?

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

1) setup 1 is more performant, because the traffic between the router and the satellite Deco does not go via the main Deco.  Not sure, however, it makes a measurable difference.

2) with setup 2, two successive routers is more complex (in case of issue).  If you have some applications requiring to be reachable from Internet, it will be alos more complex to configure both routers to achieve that.

3) The actual "routing" (DHCP, NAT) of the Deco has no added value compared to another router. If you do not intend using "added value" features of the Deco such as parental control and QOS, I suggest running the Deco in AP mode.

If you require fixed local IP addresses for some devices, you will have to configure that on the Router, if Deco is in AP mode.  If you prefer managing that from the Deco app, then you need to run the Deco in Router mode.

It is quite easy to change the operation mode of the Deco, so, if you go for setup 2, you can later play with both modes.

Setup 1 is not allowed if the Deco is in Router mode.  I suggest changing the mode from router, the default, as soon as the main Deco is setup and tested, certainly before connecting any satellite Deco to the switch or to the router.

Another setup would be replacing the ISP Router by a simple ONT (fiber to Ethernet), and running the main Deco as the unique Router.  That would be my preferred setup, if the ISP actually allows that.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I agree with you—Setup 1 is definitely more efficient.
