Hi all - I have a set of BE63 devices connected together via Cat6 ethernet cable doing wired backhaul. The main router in my home while the secondary is in a detached building I call my shop. Very simple setup and is working well. I want to add a POE reolink camera outside the shop so I need to introduce a POE switch somewhere in the mix.

1) Add a POE switch in the shop and then plug the existing ethernet backhaul cable into it, then run a patch cable to both the existing BE63 and to the new POE camera.

2) Leave the existing backhaul cable plugged into the BE63, and run a patch cable from it to the POE switch and then a patch cable from the switch to the camera.

3) Other ideas?

I'm wondering if the BE63 in the shop can act as a POE switch itself? So I I were to add the new POE switch in my home and send power over the backhaul cable could I then run a patch cable from an open port on the BE63 to the camera?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Tim

Thanks for reaching out! I understand that you have a Deco Mesh system (BE63) set up with wired backhaul between your main house and a detached shop, and you want to add a PoE-powered Reolink camera outside the shop. You're considering how best to introduce a PoE switch into your network and whether the Deco unit itself can provide PoE power to the camera.

To clarify, Deco Mesh models—including your BE63—do not function as PoE switches. They can only receive power via their own power adapter (unless you have a specific Deco model with PoE support, such as those ending in 'PoE' or 'Outdoor'), and cannot supply PoE power to other devices. This means you cannot power your PoE camera by connecting it directly to a Deco unit.

Here are your options:
1. Add a PoE switch in your shop. Plug the existing Ethernet backhaul cable from your main network into the PoE switch. Then, connect both your Deco unit and the PoE camera to the PoE switch using separate patch cables. This is the recommended and most straightforward solution.

2. Do not attempt to power the camera from the Deco unit. The Deco BE63 does not provide PoE output on its Ethernet ports, so connecting the camera directly to the Deco will not supply power.

3. You do not need to add a PoE switch in your main house unless you have other PoE devices there. Power cannot be sent through the Deco unit to the camera in the shop.

Summary:
• Place a PoE switch in your shop.
• Connect the backhaul cable to the PoE switch.
• Connect both the Deco and the camera to the PoE switch with patch cables.

If you need further details on PoE switch selection or cable requirements, please let us know!

@Timmed Having limited experience with PoE (through my wife's work provided equipment at the start to COVID-19), I would suggest connecting the PoE switch to the shop BE63 and the PoE device to the switch.  Make sure you research/check for PoE rated Ethernet cables as they seem to run hot.  I did not like that and as soon as I could stopped using PoE.

As an option there are PoE "Injectors" if you are not planning on connecting more than one/not many PoE devices....
