For arriving home, I would like to activate it when my phone is within a certain distance of my home, e.g. half a mile away. Is there a way to do that?

I don't think tplink has any product can do that so far. You may need some kind of sensor.

IFTTT may provide a solution

IFTTT has a TP-Link Kasa service. If you can link it to a service that can detect that you are a certain distance from home this could work.
