Thank you all for sharing your guidance! When wiring the v1 secondary the 2 reds are together and the two whites are together, but what about the black load wire coming from the switch? Should that get connected to the black wire coming from the wall, remain unattached or something else?

Thanks in advance!

  @ORuser

What is the difference between the v1 and v2? I haven't been able to get a v1 satellite so I'm stuck with 2 v2 satellites. So far, I've only been able to get one satellite or the other to work (never both together). I'm going absolutely bonkers!

The two are not compatible. Only the V1 work in the four way. I was never able to get V2 to work.

You can not buy fhe remotes seperately.  You need to buy two V1 kits (you can through Amazon) and you use the remote from one of the kits.  The master from the second kit is not needed but that can work as a stand alone switch elsewhere.

  @TosaKerry

I stumbled across this trying to get my 5 way hs230 to work. I'm having the similar issue with the light blinking red.

based on what I've read, the only way to get it to work is a mixture of v1 switches and v2, or all v1.

that leads me to my final question before I attempt to buy all these switches.

has anyone done this in a 5 way configuration with 1 main and 3 satellite dimmers? V1/v2 or all v1?

finally, I am assuming if I give up I can go back to a non dimming Kasa 3 way and be fine in a 5 way configuration?

  @ORuser I'm going through this now and found this configuration really helpful - how do you know if you are buying V1 switches? Was looking on ebay a bit. Is there a clue in the box color or anything?

  @mattyb513 You can find the V1 switches on Amazon.  Just check that they state V1.8 in the description.

That said, since doing mine, they worked well for a while but I now have issues where the lights, when on, will occassionally flash off and then back on, a few times a day.

It is like one of the switches is resetting itself or is beginning to fail.  Perhaps I just need to reset everything, but I would caution that while it works, long term reliaility may not be there.

I really wish TP-Link made a new smart Matter enabled switch that natively worked in single or 3 and 4 way applications.

 I'm usually more of a lurker than a contributor but this thread helped me a lot so I figured I'd share my experience.

I originally had 2x KS230 V2 kits but I bought another KS230 V1 KIT from eBay.  You can see the version near the model number on the box.

Below were my steps to get this to work:

1) Turn off power 😀

2) Install V2 MAIN switch on LINE side as per regular instructions

3) Install V2 SATELLITE switch on LOAD side as per regular instructions

4) Remove 4-way switch and connect reds together and blacks together (this will make it into a standard 3-way setup)

5) Turn power on and make sure 3-way setup is working

6) Turn power off

7) Install V1 SATELLITE switch at 4-way by installing both reds on one traveller slot and both blacks on the other traveller slot

(note - in my case, although I had blacks on bottom traveller slot on both the V2 MAIN and V2 SATELLITE, they had to be on the top traveller slot on the V1 SATELLITE for it to work)

8) Turn power on and have a beer
