Hey Tapo Users!

We have all-round upgraded the energy monitoring function feature in the Tapo app for you. As energy prices soar these days, we are all seeking ways to save on our electric bills. The new energy monitoring offers an opportunity to better understand and optimize your energy consumption.

To use the new Energy Monitoring, the following conditions should be met

  1. Tapo P110 or Tapo 115 should be upgraded to 1.1.2 or newer firmware.
  2. Tapo App should be upgraded to the latest version 2.10.X or newer App.

Energy Monitoring Dashboard36e40a4ced0247d79d96acfd695ecf88

The new energy monitoring dashboard contains three core data:

Daily Power Consumption: Display the energy consumption of “today” between 0:00 and the current time.

Monthly Power consumption: Display energy consumption in the past 30 days.

Current power: Refresh real-time power value every 5 seconds.

Energy Measurement to 0.001 kWh: More decimal places in the energy consumption metric to 0.001Kwh (1W) helps you to view more accurate energy data.

Energy Usage & Power Graphs

With straightforward graphs, you can easily know when your appliances are consuming the most power, and how much power they consume at different times. It can also display your power consumption in the calendar view.

Energy Usage Graph: You can now check your total power consumption by day, month, or year.

①  Day: Display the power consumption in the past 24 hours, the minimum time interval is an hour.

②  Month: Display the power consumption in the past 30 days., the minimum time interval is a day.

③  Year: Display the power consumption of the past 12 months, the minimum time interval is a month.

Power Graph: You can review the power data at a different time during the past day or week.

①  Day: Display the power value in the past 24 hours, the minimum time interval is minutes.

②  Week: Display the power value of the past 7 days, the minimum time interval is 1 hour.

Energy Calendar

Daily Energy usage in a Calendar: Display daily power consumption in the past 3 months and the Monthly electric bill.

Visualizing electric consumption with colors: Use colors blue, orange, and red to represent lower, average, and higher scales of electric consumption values.

Electric Bill Calculator

Input your electricity rate to get an estimated cost of the power consumed by each connected device.

The Tapo app has Singular Billing and Periodic Billing types for Variable Electricity Rates for Times During the Day.

Learn more about how to choose the correct billion method in the official FAQ for the feature: Tapo Energy Monitoring 2.0

NOTE:

1) the price unit by default is consistent with the unit of the Tapo Care subscription.

2) Electric Bill in the app provides an estimated cost for reference only, the real electricity costs will depend on the electric company.

Tapo Power Protection

Power Sensing as Trigger:

You can set Auto Power Off for the connected device when its power exceeds your customized threshold. This feature can help to protect your electronics and prevent fire accidents caused by electrical overload.

Customized Threshold:

You can manually set the threshold by dragging the scroll bar left and right.

Adjustable range:1W-3670W

Minimum adjustment unit:10W

Notification Reminder:

When the Tapo plug is overloaded, it will turn off automatically and send a push notification to your mobile device.

  @IthoughtInewit,

Thanks for getting in touch; two things: what type of plug+hardware version are you using, and what is the type of your phone, iOS or Android?

You can try and use the beta release of the Tapo app to see if it will fix the abnormal data. Otherwise, the  beta apps have a debug option to send data directly to the developers so they can better diagnose the cause

iOS Kasa Beta 2.11.0: https://testflight.apple.com/join/6yiRhKNU

Android Kasa 2.11.6: https://static.tp-link.com/upload/beta/2022/202210/20221026/tapo_trial_2.11.6(266)_20221026141130_release_energy_usage.apk.zip

If the problem persists,  please help collect the app log and share the log file with us to analyze the problem better.

Here are the steps to collect the log:

1. Open Debug App and view the abnormal Day/Month Energy Usage graph.

2. Go to APPMe>About, and click the Tapo icon at the top  3 times on the About page, it will show the log page in the APP.

3. Choose the log, swipe Left and then click the Share button to send us the files.

  @IthoughtInewit,

Thanks for doing all the work and sending the log files to our team, they are extremely useful for diagnosing bugs, as the team has to first has to reproduce the issue in a test environment.

For anyone else that is experiencing abnormal energy reporting, try first clearing the existing energy data from the device, as IthoughtInewit had done, to see if the plug will start reporting the correct energy usage from then on. Otherwise, please follow the steps outlined above to download the beta version of the app and send your log files to the development team.

  @Riley_S Do we have a sense when Matter products will recieve energy monitoring? I have my devices properly configured in the Tapo app (and Apple Home, Amazon Alexa) but the normal feature to observe electricity usage is not there. Love the product so far, though!

  @nbfa,

The energy monitoring feature is normally tied more to the hardware of the device, rather than the features. The P125M was not planned to have energy monitoring as one of the readable attributes. Saying that, I just posted a release to the Kasa forums for the KP125M, which is our first matter device to support energy monitoring through the Kasa app; however, the Jury is still out on how the energy monitoring is set to work with or communicate these attributes over the matter protocol.

As these features are rolled and worked out, I am sure we will see these features brought to more devices soon. I will try to get more information from our teams on this, as the matter protocol and these features are still in active development and things may change.

[EDIT: It looks like this functionality may actually be hanging on the matter protocol and its infrastructure. I am working with our product testing team to figure it all out this week]

Hi,

My Tapo P110M (Hardware version 1.0, latest firmware) correctly displays energy consumption in the Tapo app, but I can't access it in Apple Home/Controller for HomeKit/Eve to use in automations. Looks like the on/off switch is exposed, but the energy consumption data isn't.

Is there anything I'm missing or is it just not supported?

Thanks!

  @Mit_Ro,

For the most part, energy monitoring compatibility would be dependent on the integration, as the energy data is stored on the plug itself and how the data is fetched.

Currently, however, the Matter Protocol still does not support energy monitoring - so you would need to wait for official protocol support to see if matter devices can be updated to communicate their energy data over the protocol. I would make sure to try linking the device to Apple Home rather than via Matter - however, I am still not sure that the energy data will be carried over.

  @Riley_S

Hi

Why can you only see 3 months energy usage in calendar view ? Is there a way to increase this ?
