Kasa Smart Plug Announcements and Matter Availability

TP-Link had previously announced its participation and involvement with the Matter Protocol. We are EXTREMELY excited to announce a slew of matter-enabled devices across our product lineups. As the devices are released, expect to see additional information about how to integrate your devices with other brands and services. Matter support is currently device-dependent; please ensure you check the specifications for each product when potentially purchasing.

At CES 2023, TP-Link Announced four new Smart Plugs for the Kasa Brand:

            Kasa KP401M – Smart Wi-Fi Outdoor Plug w/Matter

            Kasa KP125M – Smart Wi-Fi Plug Slim w/Energy Monitoring and Matter

            Kasa EP40A – Smart Wi-Fi Outdoor Plug w/HomeKit

            Kasa KP125 – Smart Wi-Fi Plug Slim w/Energy Monitoring

We look forward to working with the community to explore the capabilities of the Matter protocol and how it can be used for automations. The matter protocol is still in its infancy with support for the protocol currently varying across smart home platforms.   @Riley_S will existing Kasa smart plugs and switches be updated to support Matter?  It would be a shame that everything already installed in our home could be disconnected so to speak.

  @Steelcor,

We really have no clue about what the plans are for existing devices. The Matter Protocol is so new, and there are so few devices on the market that it is difficult to tell how each company is developing the protocol for their devices.

I would imagine that the current priority is to develop matter into the newest devices, with compatibility updates may be coming at a later time. It is worth noting that while the devices may not use the protocol, there are many developments being made to make the connection between services more consistent. For example, it is possible that increased performance and compatibility could be brought to non-matter devices via a hub; however we have no insight into the future plans and implementations of the protocol.

I can say that our teams are moving ahead with matter and continuing to test matter-compatible devices for release.
