Please note that the Kasa plug does NOT support high-power inductive loads driven by motors, which often draw a high inrush current at startup, causing damage to the smart plug over time. What types of loads can the Tapo/Kasa plug support?
Is your hot water recirculating pump an inductive load device? Make sure to check its specifications carefully to confirm the compatibility.

@Wayne-TP Although plugged into 120 V AC, the motor is a brushless DC motor with a rated maximum draw of 0.54A AC. (The unit is a Taco 006e3 ECM Circulator, tacocomfort . com ). I have had the pump since 2001 and the smart plug has been on it forever.
I put the smart plug there to show me the power the pump consumed, and never to switch it on or off. Now that I know the power, I don't need to have the plug in the circuit.

Oh, I'm quite surprised that your plug has lasted this long. Given this situation, it seems more like an anomaly due to normal wear and tear, so it might be time to consider getting a new device.
