i installed it so you'd think i could get it off the wall, but nope! and i plugged it in while still mounted but it didn't charge :( hope do i take it down temporarily?

Use a pin to press the hole on top of the doorbell to detach it from the bracket. You can also find this information in the manuals, the Quick Installation Guide.
