Model: Tapo H500
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version:

I've recently moved wholesale from Arlo (12+ cam areas and years of subscriptions) to the tapo family... 4k C660 and 460's so far...

What I miss or what I'd love is

1..Thumbnail alerts  - on my phone from the hub

2..Ability to edit AI tags -  a pet can be an animal like a deer and give me AI for the cat and dog like people recognition Kitty and dog Alfie... Arlos also gave a really nice vehicle enrichment where I could tag amazon UPS and FedEx trucks along with teslas etc...  let the hub be a RAG SLM

3..Hybrid storage model meaning use local on camera for 7/24 and hub for combining multiple alert feed footage

4.. Re #3 ... would love to get a correlated alert timeline from the hub not just individual cameras.. a hub should provide a blended view  stacks trigger alerts in time order...

Anyhow, so far i love the 7/24 with solar and 5s intervals, pulling a timelapse is cool... like the form factors of the cameras and image quality, FOV is a little limiting, C660 not getting to horizontal is annoying but all in all I am super happy to see the back of Arlo ...

Oh and Tapo picked up a bobcat last night that also walked within 8ft of an Arlo where the camera was still fast asleep and never triggered !... Shame on Arlo... good for Tapo !

@-Guy-C- I like the H500. It gives me the ability to not use cloud services and keep everything pretty much local. It's not hard to manage. You can use the HDMI output to put your cams on a panel so that you aren't glued to your app. That's a huge benefit. It accepts storage, but I would caution you that the H500 gets a bit hot, and might lead to disk failure if you're not careful-can't say whether temperature or a bad batch of disks is the issue, but I lost 2 internal disks in a row over the summer.

@sroza1 Thanks for the response... I am not worried about theft of the cameras/card as we live in a gated community and remote and wanted to use 24/7 on more than just a few cameras so elected to put a chunky fast card in each of the cameras ... I am still tuning the system TBH as Tapo like others has some funky behavior...

Right now I have 4 C660, 2 C460 and have 2 C465's coming which should cover everything I need...

WRT the Hub, my ideal would be for it to let me leave the recording on the cameras, suck the alerts in and consolidate them into a timeline .. also be able to set universal false positives as the only pain in the ass is treating every camera as a seperate security system..e.g we had a rainstorm and all but one of the cameras threw up false positives on 'person' with rain drops and bushes...so i had to adjust the thresholds per camera while I was being bombed with alrts :-)

I'd also truly love to be able to recognize out dog or cat e.g the differnce between a bobcat and the dog and not call a deer a pet ...

Anyhow, I hope the hub get a little smarter and more custom... I did buy one and send it back as the face recognition isnt great from the cameras up high like the 660's but I am really liking the tracking to remove deadspots and the need for more cameras...

net/net am really enjoying the Tapo's and super pleased I dropped off Arlo eve though their camera felt a little more substantial and had a better wifi range... TP seem to be innovating way faster and having no subscription is joyous..

Oh and the last thing I really really miss is just a thumbnail image on the alert... Eufy does this for free so I expect at some point this will be part of the Hub and that will definately sway the purchase !

Thanks agian for the response .. Guy

  @-Guy-C-

I don't want to monitor more than one thing, so just in that, the hub gets my money.

The ability-even though it's a touch glitchy depending on the firmware-to output to a panel and be monitored is also a win for me.

All of the alerts coming from the same device also is big.

I don't know if you're going to be able to customze alerts or get differentiated alerts based on size out of this. Face recognition was pushed as a big plus, but I've stopped trying to train the system because it's just too dumb to do AI stuff. How many times do I need to tell the hub what my son's face looks like before it says "Son 1 was here on this date/time"? Instead I'm endlessly confirming that the same faces are the same people.

Not hub-related, but the lack of being able to actually program smart automations is bothersome as well. I've several times tried to do what I think are very simple automations with my gear only to find that the actions are super limited. I come from the SmartThings world where I was always constantly impressed with the ability of the software and hardware to do amazing things-sky's the limit-and Tapo isn't that today.

Way better than Arlo, still better than my own cameras on my Synology, but still has lots of need to improve and I hope it does.
