Disable annoying and loud SD Card / WiFi / Setup warnings

Disable annoying and loud SD Card / WiFi / Setup warnings
Disable annoying and loud SD Card / WiFi / Setup warnings
2 weeks ago

I'm using a C645D and a C465 both with the latest firmware.  Every time you disconnect from WiFi or have an issue with an SD card, the speaker starts blasting loud warnings and there is no way to disable or adjust this.  It happened during initial setup and a few times afterwards, and it's a big problem.  This "feature" doesn't make sense especially with outdoor cameras.  For example, if the warning goes off in the middle of the night, the noise could be very disturbing for everyone including neighbors.  Another problem is that you can't easily address the issue especially if the camera is mounted outside and requires a ladder to swap a card, or for a general network connection issue.

Possible solutions through firmware updates could be:

1. Disable the audio warnings on the camera and instead make them appear in the app (This makes the most sense)

2. Create a setting in the app to control the camera's speaker volume directly or to mute.  (Currently there is a speaker icon that adjusts the microphone and not the actual speaker level.  This should be changed and both adjustments should be easily available on the camera home screen.)

Hello,
Welcome to the community, and thank you for your feedback. We understand how disruptive loud voice prompts can be, especially for outdoor cameras and nighttime use.

Regarding the SD card warnings: if the SD card is detected but not formatted, the camera will periodically play voice prompts such as “SD card not formatted”. In this case, please format the SD card in the Tapo app, which should stop the audio warning.

To better understand the Wi‑Fi disconnection warnings, could you please confirm:
1.What exact voice prompt is played when the Wi‑Fi disconnects?
2.Do both cameras play the same prompt?
3.What is the LED status on the camera when this occurs?

This information will help us determine the cause more accurately.
Best Regards.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.  To clarify,

There are 2 issues going on with the SD card problem.  The primary issue is that the camera keeps showing that there is no detected SD card even though setup has already been completed.  The card had already been formatted and recording files.  After failed detection of an SD card, at some point when the camera finally detects the SD card again, the loud prompts restart.  So the base problem is the initial SD card detection, which is then compounded by the secondary problem of the annoying loud prompts.

Some key info:

This is mostly occuring on the C645D model camera.  I own 4 Tapo cameras and all of them have had random intermittant SD card reading issues.  The SD cards being used are SanDisk High endurance V30 256gb cards.  All are brand new, not fake, and have had no prior read issues.  Reseating the cards in the slot is not the issue. Camera is in detection only mode, not 24x7 capture.  Battery has remained between 99-100%.  Problem is intermittant with no correlating issues.   Card reading issues like this shouldn't be happening on brand new equipment especially when the cards are new with zero overwrites.

As far as the Wi-Fi disconnection, the main prompt was for wi-fi detection.  This issue is also intermittent and has occurred a small number of times when wi-fi has been disconnected.  I am unaware of the LED status as the cameras are outside and I have LED status deactivated.

Hello,
Thank you for the detailed explanation and for taking the time to share your observations.
Based on the information you provided, we’d like to clarify an important point regarding SD card compatibility.
Although the SanDisk High Endurance V30 256GB cards you are using are high‑quality products, this specific model is not listed on our official SD card compatibility list. For 256GB capacity, the model that has been fully tested and confirmed compatible is:
SanDisk Extreme 256GB
U3, V30, SDXC I, A2, up to 160 MB/s
You can find the full and updated compatibility list here for reference: microSD Card Compatibility for Tapo and Kasa Security Cameras

To help isolate the root cause, we kindly suggest testing with an SD card model from the compatibility list above. This will allow us to determine whether the issue is related to SD card compatibility or to the camera itself.

If the issue still occurs after switching to a compatible SD card, we recommend that you contact our Technical Support team directly so they can further investigate and follow up on this case in more depth.

Best Regards.

Hello,

Thanks for clarifying.  It looks like the card I'm using is on the list, but only for the 128gb variant.

Was there a reason why the 256gb variant was not compatible?

Will this compatibility list be updated and tested over time, or is this final?

Clearly from my experience there are performance issues. However, there should be more higher capacity compatible SD cards especially given that recorded events for the higher resolution cameras quickly take up space.

I think the issue still stands regarding the loud setup warnings though.  It would be nice to have easier control of the speaker volume directly in the app and not through the conversation submenus.
