Firmware Version:

I've purchased a few Tapo S200D Smart Remote Dimmer switches to control my outdoor lights. I was able to get one to work setting up the automation in the Tapo app. After this success I wanted to add a few more S200D Switches for other outlets and was told by Tapo I could just 'add' to the already created automation routines just pick a different device (outlet) and different S200D switch. I did this and at first this behaved correctly. However, after about 10 min. the switches seemed to stop working independently and each switch now controls both outlets which is not what I want. I bought two other switches but don't want to add them until I can be sure these two S200D switches work correctly.

Any one have a solution to this?

Have you checked your automation settings? Be aware of those duplicate settings, make sure they're either disabled or deleted.

You may share some screenshots of your settings here.

Tech support originally told me I could duplicate the automation settings and share them across multiple devices, thereby decluttering the UI in the app.  My most recent call with them told me I can not do this and each automation step have to be dedicated to one device like the S200D button. Sadly this means I will have a huge amount of automation steps that will clutter up the UI. If one S200D has four automation steps (ON, OFF, CW and CCW) and I have four S200D buttons, I now have 16 individual automation steps that I have to scroll thru, even though the four main steps are duplicated four times. And this is before  add any other switches. If I automate 10 devices in the Tapo app and each has four automation steps - well you can see now there are forty (!) steps clogging up the UI. It sure seems like there should be a better way to group these - If I'm just duplicating the same four steps across 10 devices please allow a better way to display this. Hopefully someone can write a simple feature request for this. In the meantime I hesitate to buy more Switches and buttons for the automation I would like to do.

As the name suggests, the duplicate function creates a complete copy of your original automation setup. This can be very helpful when you need to create multiple automations with similar settings, for example, if you want the same effective time. However, if most of the settings in your target automation would be different, such as using different commands or different devices ,it may actually be faster to create a new automation from scratch instead of editing a duplicated one.

Your idea of grouping and managing automation rules is excellent. I encourage you to create a separate feature request post for it. Tapo - Feature Requests Other users who share the same need can then vote and join the discussion. Our product team regularly reviews popular feature requests, and those with high engagement and detailed use-case descriptions are prioritized for evaluation.
