Model: HS220
Hardware Version: V2
Firmware Version:

Hello Everyone,

I just purchased multiple dimmer switches, Kasa HS220P3. I was sent 2 different versions, v2.0 (made in China) and v1.8 (made in Vietnam). I have been trying to find out how they are different. Externally, they seem to be the same but I when I put them side by side. I have tried to get an answer from TP-Link but they seem to have drawn a blank on it. I was trying to find out what's the difference to determine which direction I should proceed in to determine if it matters whether I'll be running 2 different versions, esp if TP-Link releases separate firmware updates for each. I'd appreciate it if anyone has any answers. Thanks!

@Robbb

From the information I got the differences are the region of manufacturer like you pointed out and the difference in packaging. Aside from that, they are the same.

@Tony I actually ran into issues with Version 1.8 switches. Just like the original poster, I bought multiple packs, and was sent both Versions 1.8 and 2.0 from Amazon. What I learned was that the Version 1.8 switches are not working with the Google Home app, even after I updated the Firmware on the 1.8 switches. No problems whatsoever on the Version 2.0 dimmer switches, I love them. I ordered a replacement from Amazon, but was again sent the 1.8 switches. I had to call them and they opened up a report about it. Maybe you can ask the software folks at TP-Link if this is an outstanding issue connecting with Google Home? Unfortunately I can't use them in the current state since I'm running everything through a Google Nest Hub I need all of my smart devices responding in Google Home.

@Cody7

What is happening exactly?

Does Google Home not see the switch or is it not responsive?

Does the Kasa app work fine?

@Robbb I just noticed that my dimmer switches (HS220) worked differently within Hoobs/HomeBridge  between hardware versions 1.8 vs 2.0. The 1.8 version works perfectly. The 2.0 version does not show up on my Apple Home app and lights on those switches continue to blink off then on every couple of minutes.

The Hoobs app I am using is:

@pcdmint

Hoobs is a third-party app, I'd recommend following up with them as we do not have info on that.

Aside from the app, if the switch itself continues to blink on and off you can reach our support here: kasa.support@tp-link.com

@Tony

Tony, thanks for your response. I do understand that Hoobs is a third-party app, and has no connection with tp-link, but I still think my information may be helpful to others that use both, as I do.

There is definitely something different between the two hardware versions (1.8 vs 2.0) of the dimmer switch HS220. I have seven dimmer switches in my home, four of them v1.8 that are working perfectly. The remaining three that are v2.0 are encountering issues when used with Hoobs. I even ordered replacements. The replacements, which are v2.0, are encountering the same exact issues.  In addition, the four v1.8 switches work as they are advertised. When they are off, and I press and hold a switch while turning it on, it will turn on at full brightness. That doesn’t work with the switches that are v2.0. Even when I try testing when Hoobs isn’t connected, they still come on at the same brightness as when they were turned off. So unless tp-link has changed the way this switch works, that’s a change right there.

I know tp-link doesn’t support their switches working with third-party apps, I am nevertheless, and hopefully a valued customer. I now have 23 other switches installed in my home that work perfectly, and even with Hoobs I might add. So unless these (v2.0) don’t work the same as your older version (v1.8), I may need to uninstall these and look for an alternative. However, I do believe something is wrong with the newer versions, and to push that aside because someone is using a third-party product, is the wrong business approach.

I guess you can use this information however you’d like. In the meantime, I’ll be contacting tp-link to see if I can request three switches with v1.8. If not, I’ll be switching.

@Tony

I bought both HS220 v1.8 and v2.0 from Amazon KASASmartStrore

v1.8 works perfectly fine on my network.

v2.0 seems to have connectivity issues.

1. It disconnects every 30 seconds.

2. It fails when setting the device name when going through installation wizard on KASA app. I believe that this is due to connectivity issue.

3. Wwitch is often unresponsive.  I cannot toggle lights off nor control dimming on the hardware.  It goes out of sync with the KASA app and 50% times.  I often see green WIFI light flashing when this happens.

4. When switch is not on the network, it is always responsive.

5. Serial number is not accepted on the KASA support website, when the product was purchased from offical KASA Smartstore on Amazon.

Since all of the v2.0 switches are doing this on my network, I suspect that there's something different between v1.8 and v2.0.

+ I have multiple Ubiquity WIFI access points, and it auto-steers band between 2.4Ghz and 5.0Ghz.
