HS210 3-Way Switch w LED bulb issue
HS210 3-Way Switch w LED bulb issue

Model: HS210
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version:

I familiar with basic electrical wiring and installed many light switches and outlets in my lifetime.  I'm 99% certain it's wired up correctly because everything works OK w regular bulbs just not LED's. After installing the HS210 3-way light switch (only one) in my hall everything seems to work fine except with one issue:  when I use an LED bulb it does not completely turn off.  The app and switch think that the light is on and indicate so.  It will be very dim about 1% brightness. When i swap out the LED bulb with a regular dumb incandescent bulb everything works right as rain again.  I tried several varieties and wattages of LED bulbs and the only LED bulb that cooperated the same as an incandescent bulb was an LED Edison type bulb using 6.5 watts.  I thought perhaps that the fixture needed a low wattage LED and even tried a 2 watt LED but it stayed dimly lit as well although the switch showed it was in the off position. Once I go over a 6.5 watt LED then the app thinks the switch is always "on" and stays dimly lit.  I'm baffled that the switch only works correctly with an incandescent bulb and not LED's albeit for the one kind.  Has anyone had similar issues using LED's with these switches?  If your switch is working great w LED's what type/kind are you using so I can try some out. Thanks!

@JohnC1701

This was seen on an HS200 where the HS200 was installed on the neutral wire instead of the Live wire, and the bulb was installed on the Live wire. When HS200 was off, only the neutral was cut off. So voltage can be detected between the Load wire and the neutral. There may be a leak current from the load wire in this situation, causing a dimmed light on the LED bulb.

What was the solution to this?? Im using the 3way switches but the switches aren't getting turned on...my neutrals have power but there is still some light leakage.

@Ferinthul Not sure if my issue was the same as yours. I was able to get power, turn them on and off just fine but when in the off position the bulbs still had a very dim glow about 1%. The only solution I found was to get 12 watt LED bulbs from Amazon and now when I turn the switch off the bulbs go out completely. Problem fixed. TP Link wanted to replace my switch thinking it was defective but the same thing happened to both of my switches on two separate three-way hook ups. So there's no way I had two  defective light switches. The solution is in the lightbulbs themselves. If you have a low wattage LED bulb then most likely it'll still pour a little bit of power enough to keep it aglow  even when it's  switched off. Go on Amazon and get 12w LED bulbs and see it that works for you.

I do really enjoy the flexibility wireless switches give you! TP-Link did a good job with this products, making it pretty simple to install, including labels, wire nuts, etc, Imagine yourself having gone from upstairs to downstairs, sit on the couch only to forget that you left the stair light on! This way you just talk to alexa and have her turn it off, or use the app! Kala jadu specialist in Gurgaon

@JohnC1701

I am having the same issue. I don't like the solution of a different bulb as the bulb has no issues when I switch back to the dumb switch.

Has anyone found another solution?

Could you explain further how to resolve this? Are you saying the whole light is wired incorrectly and not fixable?

@Mookie5 The switches are wired correctly but will not work with certain LED bulbs. Every incandescent bulb has worked fine. The only work around using LED's is to use higher wattage LED bulbs. I will attach the link of the bulbs I got from Amazon that now work correctly. With these bulbs they completely turn off w no flickering.

I dont think this is complete correct as i got it working proper by using two smart switches for both switches in the 3 way. I didnt have to change to bulb. So i guess those seem to be the only two solutions so far. Still seems odd to me that it works with two mechanical switches, it works with 2 smart switches, behaves odd with 1 smart switch and 1 mechanical.

Thanks for the quick reply

@Mookie5 It seems like it as I only have the one smart switch on my three way lights and bulb switch was the only solution I found. Maybe Kasa can correct this flaw in a firmware update. Thanks for ur input and solution.
