KP303 locking up and not responding
KP303 locking up and not responding
Hello. Recently my KP303 strip has begun randomly locking up. Literally 'reezing' in what the current state is. None of the 3 control buttons toggle. Cannot access it via the app (show grayed out).
If I unplug and plug back in the issue clears... and then randomly happens again. Freezing every few days on average.
Tried doing resets and factory resets per the instructions (https://www.tp-link.com/support/faq/2648/). However, please note that these instructions say to use the 'control button' for the factory reset... however, the KP303 has 3 control buttons. Tried all 3.
Issue still happens randomly.
Any help?

KP303 V2.0 Firmware 1.0.7
Problem Description
The KP303 V2.0 1.0.7 freezes and goes offline intermittently. When KP303 goes offline in the APP, the strip also freezes and it can’t even be controlled by the physical power button.
The issue could be restored temporarily by rebooting the power strip (unplug and re-plug in).
Solution
Firmware 1.0.8 is released with the fix, please update your device to the latest version.

What are the appliances you connected to this KP303? The product does not allow the connection of extra power strips to expand power interfaces. All connected devices must adhere to the specified power and current requirements. Exceeding the rated power or current levels over an extended period may result in hardware damage and could potentially lead to safety issues.
What's the SYS LED status when the problem occurs? How does the LED of the smart outlet change when you toggle its control button manually?
Any one of the three control buttons can reset the KP303, don't worry.

Hello. Apologies for the delayed response. The email notification of your message went to the junk folder for some strange reason.
Here is a partial answer... will get specifis on the ratings from home later.
There are no other power strips or plugs atttached. Only have a LED tree attached to the strip. Ratings should be standard 120v/60hz. Will check the rest of the ratings.
The Sys LEDs are 'frozen on'. When toggling any of the 3 control buttons (even the 2 which have nothing connected) does notthing... it stays frozen on. Unplugging and plugging back clears this issue for a few days and then it returns.
Things seems to be fine for several months and then there was a FW update... some time after the FW update this issue began appearing.

Good morning. Below/attached is a pic of the ratings. Again, it is a simple decorative tree with led lights. I have the same tree in another room connected to an EP10 Kasa Smart Plug mini and there are no issues.
Looking back at the history, I purchased the KP303 back in Dec 2022 and did not have any issues until sometime after a FW upgrade. Cant remember exactly when the FW upgrade happened... possibly in the last 1-2 months.

@Chancleta Same problem here. Four KP303 power strips (along with a boatload of 115, 125 and EP25 plugs) were all stable prior to update to fw 1.0.7. Since the update, just the power strips lock up. Random intervals, not quite as frequently as yours, but usually one at a time, they just lock up and require power cycling to restore operation. Tech support didn't have a method for downgrading fw.
I'm replacing all four and avoiding the fw 1.0.7 update.

Downgrading would at least make this issue go away. However, I am hoping the root cause can be identified, debugged and updated. Fingers crossed.
The more people that post this issue the more attention it will be get.

@Chancleta agreed! These things tend to live behind and under furniture, even just factory resetting and reprogramming as part of troubleshooting (including redoing outlet names and re-adding to home automations) is not fun.

Can you provide the exact hardware and firmware information of your smart plugs (except the KP303)? Did you try to press the power button when it didn't respond to the APP commands?
How was the led status of your devices when the issue occurred?
While the issue's symptoms might appear similar, if your product comes in various forms, encompassing multiple models, hardware, and firmware versions, the underlying causes of the problem may not necessarily be the same. We need to address each case individually and analyze them specifically.

@Wayne-TP just to confirm, * only * the kp303 power strips behave like this. I only mentioned the other installed kasa smart plugs because they are operating side by side in the same WiFi and power environment and their operation is rock-solid. They power a variety of loads, nothing is overloaded.
My four KP303 were reliable before the firmware update. Since updating to fw 1.0.7, they have each been periodically locking up, not at the same time. When one freezes up, its LED indicators stay in whatever state they were in--nothing flashing, if an outlet was on it stays on/if it was off it stays off. You find out there's a problem because the device shows offline in the app. When this happens, button presses are useless, the buttons no longer toggle the outlet or initiate a reset. Unplugging the power strip, waiting 30 seconds, then plugging it back in restores operation for days or weeks, but the problem always comes back.
The affected devices are all model KP303. They report hardware v. 2.0 in the Kasa app, but the version on the serial number label is 2.8.
