Monday
Model: Kasa KL135
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.0.15

A few days ago, all of my Kasa scenes randomly stopped working. I use Kasa scenes with Siri Shortcuts so I can turn my bedroom lights on/off or change them to specific colors. This setup had been working fine for a while.

Now every scene fails. The weird part is I can still control each bulb individually in the Kasa app, even when I’m on cellular data, so the bulbs clearly have remote access and aren’t just offline. But if I run any scene, even a brand-new scene with one single bulb turning on or off, it fails.

My bedroom group also stopped working. When I delete the group, it can reappear, and rebuilding groups/scenes does not seem to fix anything.

Troubleshooting I’ve tried so far:
- Factory reset each KL135 bulb twice
- Re-added the bulbs to Kasa
- Rebooted the router
- Power cycled the bulbs
- Checked firmware, all say up to date
- Tested Kasa on Wi-Fi and cellular
- Confirmed individual bulb control works remotely
- Created a brand-new scene with only one bulb turning on/off
- Tested existing scenes and new scenes
- Tried deleting/recreating groups
- Tried the Tapo app
- Checked router settings like 2.4 GHz, WPA2-PSK/AES, channel, and channel width

In Tapo, the bulbs respond locally, but it says they are “Local Only” and fails when I try to enable remote control, saying the router has no internet. That doesn’t really make sense because Kasa can control the same bulbs remotely over cellular.

Device info:
KL135
Hardware V1.0
Firmware 1.0.15, says up to date

Has anyone else had Kasa scenes or groups suddenly stop working like this? It feels like the scene/group side of Kasa is broken, not the actual bulbs or Wi-Fi.

Just to confirm, the scene fails even when controlled manually in the Kasa or Tapo app, correct?

  • Try to delete and reinstall the app.
  • Try to use another phone or tablet.
  • Restart your phone.

Can you check the version of your Kasa and the Tapo app? What's the model and system version of your phone?
