Model: OC300
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.14.7

Hey TP-Link community,

I'm at my wit's end after a baffling conversation with TP-Link support. I'm hoping someone here can help me make sense of it all. I've got an OC300 controller with an ER7206 router, and I want to enable WireGuard VPN functionality with multiple client/peer connections. The ER7206 firmware update (1.3.0) supports WireGuard, but the OC300 (1.14.7) doesn't seem to have that functionality yet.

Long story short, the support agent suggested that I should run the Windows or Linux software controller to configure the ER7206 since my OC300 doesn't support WireGuard yet. However, their remarks kept getting tangled up in confusion, with them saying things like "don't run the two controller in the same compurter" and "run them at different compurter." It's like talking to a brick wall!

As far as I know, the OC300 is a hardware device (only) that runs on the network and connects to the network, not a software running on a computer. (Heck, did I buy this thing for nothing???) Can someone please help me decipher this cryptic support conversation and advise me on how to proceed?

Here's the game plan I extracted from the support chat - I think:

1. Disconnect the ER7206 from the OC300 hardware controller.

2. Unplug / disconnect the OC300 from the network.
3. Install the TP-Link Windows or Linux software controller on a separate computer.
4. Connect the ER7206 to the computer running the software controller - or to the same network (???).
5. Adopt the ER7206 into the Windows or Linux software controller.
6. Configure the ER7206 with WireGuard VPN functionality using the Windows or Linux software controller.

7. Work as if I never purchased an OC300...

Is this the right approach, or am I barking up the wrong tree? I'd appreciate any help or insights from real humans who have dealt with a similar setup or at least understand the topology of the situation (and English) better.

Thanks in advance, and I apologize for the emotional venting. I'm just feeling like I'm stuck in a technical purgatory with support that seems to speak a different language and doesn't really have contextual presence with the technology.

Yes, it is indeed the case that you're trying to do something (Wireguard) which your OC300 cannot do at this moment of time.

Means ER7206 in controller mode (OC300) no way at the moment.

TP-Link clearly stating in their announcements (e.g. this one: https://community.tp-link.com/en/business/forum/topic/245226):

So, either go for standalone mode, wait "patiently" for v5.9 on OC300 to make Wireguard work or get rid of your OC300 and use Windows/Linux/Cloud Based Controller - all these are on 5.9 and will support Wireguard in combination with your ER7206.

There have been many attempts in this forum to make TP-Link re-think their software release policies but I guess we've been unlucky so far.

Standard answer is this one:

Sorry for the bad news mate.

Hello @jilio,

Sorry for any trouble caused!

If you are talking about the Wireguard VPN function on OC300, I'm afraid to tell you it doesn't support it yet.
The ER7206 has released the latest version that supports Wireguard VPN, but it also needs the firmware of OC300 support.

And OC300 will directly get a firmware release for Controller 5.9 to add all new features supported (contains Wiregurd VPN) in Omada Software Controller v5.8 and v5.9.

So please keep an eye on the official website and this thread.

Hi @Hank21, well I'm talking about the WireGuard on the ER7206 since it's the actual gateway/firewall/router, but the OC300 is the controller that's supposed to be managing the ER7206. WireGuard was added to the recent 1.3.0 update for the ER7206 and, according to support, WireGuard support on the OC300 is "imminent"... But I'm attempting to configure the ER7206 to perform the work stated above and this weird verbiage and so forth from support has really thrown me for a loop as detailed above. Sorry, I thought I was clear on this in my message above.

  @jilio

It gets slightly worse...you won't be able to import your current OC300 config into the software controller either, assuming it has the same issue as the OC200's do on 5.7.6, but will instead have to recreate your controller settings in the new 5.9.31 s/w controller.

Thanks for your remarks guys. This is definitely a weird situation. I'm considering waiting, but their release schedule and this recommendation makes me think that even having an OC300 doesn't have any perceivable benefits now. I had thought that the OC300 would accelerate processing and provide higher throughput for VPN and such processing services as I heard that it has a CPU teaming effect when coupled with an ER7206, but now this isn't even clear.

Who ever told you this:

" I had thought that the OC300 would accelerate processing and provide higher throughput for VPN and such processing services as I heard that it has a CPU teaming effect when coupled with an ER7206, but now this isn't even clear. "

Is completely wrong.

It doesn't have to be clear, because an SDN network doesn't operate in that manner.

The Controller and or Controller appliance has nothing to do with offloading horsepower.  It just runs the controller, that's it.

@kimchi gun

Note this review from Kruse Ludington:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-reviews/RMQHO13WNZHRV/

And for the ER7206:

So was Mr. Ludington dishonest?

What the heck do you mean "it doesn't have to be clear"???????? Who doesn't have to be clear about what?

If you believe everything written on the Amazon websites, much disappointment lies ahead for you. Doubly so, when the poster's first name is something like 'Kruse'.

Ha... ok... he's wrong!  It doesn't work like that.  Flat out.  That's what I'm saying, if you knew how an SDN network operates... you would know that this is untrue!

You said in your last sentence, this is not clear, I replied with... it doesn't have to be "clear" because it doesn't operate that way.

Love the mutual ego stroking going on here. Kinda like StackExchange.

Will definitely be sending these products back for this particular job. Sadly I work with several of these devices at different locations and can't send them all back, just this  most recent purchase.
