Model: TL-PA4020P KIT
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version:

I am experiencing a reproducible issue with TP-Link TL-PA4020P powerline adapters and would like to ask whether others have seen similar behavior or found a solution.

Setup and symptoms:

  • New electrical installation

  • One single RCD/FI (30 mA), always the same one trips

  • Powerline model: TL-PA4020P

  • No Wi-Fi extenders, no pass-through socket usage

  • No devices connected to the pass-through socket

  • The powerline adapter is plugged directly into a wall outlet

  • No other changes in the installation

Observed behavior:

  • When the powerline adapters are connected, the RCD trips sporadically after several days

  • When all powerline adapters are removed, the system runs for two weeks without a single RCD trip

  • This clearly identifies the powerline adapters as the trigger

  • The issue persists even when no other devices are connected downstream

Questions:

  1. Are there known cases where TL-PA4020P / HomePlug AV adapters cause RCD/FI tripping due to leakage currents or HF coupling?

  2. Are newer TP-Link models (e.g. AV1000 / AV2) known to behave better in this regard?

  3. Does TP-Link recommend specific models or configurations for installations with sensitive RCDs?

  4. Would changing to another TP-Link powerline generation realistically reduce this problem?

I am not looking for high bandwidth; stability and electrical compatibility with an RCD-protected installation are the priority.

Any experience, confirmation, or guidance would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Hello  @Utzaki ,

Thanks for reaching out.

To troubleshoot this case, please try the following steps:
1. Try a different wall socket: Plug the Powerline Adapter into another wall outlet to see if the problem persists. This can help determine if it is related to a specific outlet or the adapter itself.
2. Reset the Powerline Adapter: Perform a hard reset on the device. For Powerline Adapters, press and hold the Pair button for 15 seconds until all LEDs briefly turn on. This will restore the device to factory settings.
3. Re-pair the devices if you have more than one: After resetting, follow the standard pairing process to reconnect your Powerline Adapters.

If the RCD/FI continues to trip or the adapter still does not function properly after these steps, there may be an incompatibility with your new electrical installation or a hardware problem with the adapter. Please contact us again with the results of the above troubleshooting steps, and provide any additional details about your electrical setup
