Hi all,

Although I have lots of networking experience, I haven't had much need to work with VLANs up until now, so I bought a TP-Link Smart Switch to gain some experience.

I am setting up a T1600G-28PS on my office network with a Meraki router.  I want to segment the network into 2 VLANS, one for our domain, and one for our shop where we service customer computers. On the Meraki, I have set up 2 VLANs, the default (VLAN1) on which the router is acting only as a gateway, there is a separate server providing DHCP and DNS.  The second VLAN (VLAN2) on which the Meraki will provide DHCP service is for our shop.

On the switch, I want ports 1-7 to be on VLAN2, and the remainder to be on VLAN1.  The Meraki is plugged into port 24.

On the VLAN configuration screen, I have selected ports 1-7 and set them as "tagged" for VLAN2.  Do I need to set the other ports as "untagged"?

Have I missed anything else?  Thanks for your time.

Hi David:

For VLAN setting, TP-LINK is different from cisco, I found Dlink,tp-link ,netgear's vlan setting is similar.

You should configure PVID for every ports.

I checked your demand, In my opinion, there are sometying wrong with your configuration.

Port 1-7, need be set to "untagged ", PVID=2,belong to vlan 2

Other ports need be set to "untageed", PVID=1,belong to vlan1

Port 24 need be set to “Tagged”, belongs to vlan 1 and vlan 2

Certainly, Meraki router need support vlan, the port that connect to TP-LINK(port 24) need be set to tagged also(belong to vlan 1 and vlan2)

There are FAQ y in Tp-link Website, you can check it, ,maybe useful for you.

I figured out how to set PVIDs. One more question though, In this instance, what PVID should port 24 have?

You can set it to the default VLAN1. The PVID on a trunk port specifies to which VLAN untagged packets arriving on the trunk are being assigned to (if any arrive at al).

Thanks so much for your input.

I have the ports set up in the VLANs as you have suggested, but I can't figure out where to change the PVID for each port.  Can you point me in the right direction for that?

Thanks!  It's working!  My domain PCs are communicating correclty, hard wired guest PCs are getting DHCP settings from the Meraki, my cameras and access points are powered from the switch and guest WiFi devices are isolated and getting DHCP settings from the cloud based Meraki DHCP server.  I managed to condense my network down from 6 devices to 3 in the process so now my cable closet is nice and tidy!
