Being a bear of very little brain I wondered if it was OK to set the powerline adaptor to the same SSID as the router/hub SSID?

Yes, we can set the same SSID as your router/hub SSID.
There are two ways:

The other is through Utility or APP.

Yes, we can set the same SSID as your router/hub SSID.

Okay, I tried this multiple times...but when I set the SSID and password on the extender (WPA4220 Kit) of the Powerline as the same SSID and password of my router --> the extender signal disappears and I can only see the router SSID with very terrible signal (which defeats the purpose of the extender) How is it so?

Hi thanks for your patience.
May I know the model number of your powerline adapters?
Have you tried to delete the current profile and search for the wireless network again to check if the signal gets much stronger?
