Model: Deco P9
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version: 1.1.0 Rel 52023

Hi,

I have come to swap some equipment on to my Deco P9 mesh network, but on the equipment the wifi shows up as WPA-PSK TKIP.

Considering how new the P9 is and how insecure the WPA protocol is, I don't want to advertise my SSID using these settings.

Could you confirm:

Is the P9 allowing connections using this insecure protocol?

Is there anyway of forcing the P9 to use WPA2 AES and disable WPA?

I do not feel my network is secure if WPA is being used and want to force all wireless connections to use WPA2.

@crayuk

Deco support WPA-PSK and WPA2-PSK at the same time, currently, there is no option to fix the security type.
We will record the inquiry and then forward to the product team to evaluate, please wait patiently, and if there are any updates, we will upload it to the official website.

@TP-Link_Deco

This is a shocking omission.

WPA is known to be extremely weak and has been for several years. The fact that I cannot disable this makes me feel so uncomfortable with the P9, I am seriously considering returning them.

I've had routers that are years old with the option of setting the security type and the fact I can't do it on these, and they are by default using a weak standard that can be cracked in a matter of minutes, is shocking.

@crayuk

wait a minute, what? It uses both at the same time? A router from 2020 is broadcasting network with WPA protocol being used?

I cannot believe this honestly. I am thinking about returning them only because if this. How is this even possible?

Yes, I agree.

I find it completely unacceptable that in 2020 a router exists that, by default, uses both WPA and WPA2 without giving the user the option of changing it.

By default, it should be WPA2-AES, with the option and suitable warning, if the user decides to choose a different protocol that is insecure. Having insecure protcols turned on by default, with no option to turn them off, is just awful design.

@TP-Link_Deco  would it be possible to get a suitable response to this and a timeline on if this will be patched in order to make this more secure?

@crayuk

I cannot believe this! We are really not able to turn off the insecure WPA protocol, which was superceded by WPA2 in about 2006? Having just spent £££ on what I thought was a top-of-the-range system, I may now return this because of this poor level of security. Even the cheapest wifi routers offer better than this.

Come on TP-link: do something about this with a rapid upgrade.

Yes, I agree.

This needs to be fixed as soon as possible.

I still can't believe it does this by default and even more so that there isn't an option to turn WPA off completely.

Basically my ISP Router has more options in WiFI department than P9 which costs 10x more.

A major part of the reason for me buying this system was to connect our Ring doorbell and security cameras to it. Not much point now, if the Tp-Link system itself is not secure and is easily hacked!!
