Unless I am misunderstanding this the firewall only controls traffic between WAN and LAN - it doesn't control any traffic between the internal LAN.

Yes you are correct, the hardware firewall on this device is WAN to LAN traffic only

 

Hardware LAN firewalls are not generally a thing for home users, in most cases LAN firewalls are software and come as part of an AV or Network solution (SEP, Bitdefender etc).
