Model: TL-WA850RE
Hardware Version: V7
Firmware Version: 1.0.1 Build 200731 Rel.64443n (6985)

Hello,

I bought this repeter with a 300Mbps 2.4GH but I can't get more than 30Mbps when connected to it, even when next to the router. My router provides a 250Mbps connexion.

Here are some screenshots.

When connected to my router:

When connected to the Extender (which is next to the router):

And here is my connexion speed to the extender:

Finally when I'm connected via an Ethernet cable to the Extender (still next to the router):

Is this behavior normal and to be expected? Is there anything I can do or should I just return it? Because in this situation the wifi provided by the Extender in the rooms where I need it is similar or worse than what I can receive from the router...

Best,

Sylven

@Sylven Good day,

Thank you for your detailed post ~

As range extender needs to receive data from the router and then forward it to the connected clients and speed will decrease during the transmission, we use it more to increase the stability in Wi-Fi dead spots rather than boost Wi-Fi Speed.

But in your case the range extender speed should be a little higher.  May I know did you test router's 2.4Ghz Wi-Fi speed or 5Ghz Wi-Fi speed?  As TL-WA850RE only supports 2.4Ghz,  please test the2.4Ghz Wi-Fi speed from Router at  the Same Location of RE .

From the photo,  WiFi link speed between RE and laptop is 144Mbps, while TL-WA850RE supports 300Mbps on Wi-Fi Link speed,

So you could find a laptop which wireless adapter supports 300Mbps and see if speed test results could be better.

@Solla-topee

Thank you for your reply. I tested my router with a 2.4Ghz speed. For the speed of the connexion the number changes depending on how much I'm using it. During a speed test the number was over 700Mbps so I don't think that my laptop doesn't handle 300Mbps connexion. Here on another test:

@Sylven Hello,

Please put the same laptop close to range extender and see if you could get 300Mbps, if not ,may I know the model number of the wireless adapter or model of your computer?

May I know the model number of your Wi-Fi router as well, thank you.

@Solla-topee Hello again,

I rebooted on Windows to have different settings. Here is the connection speed for the Extender:

Also I noticed that my router is actually on a 5GHz band (sorry...) but my phone is connected to the 2.4 band and by doing the speed tests with my phone I reach 200Mbps on my router and 20Mbps on the Extender. Unfortunatelly I can't remember the pasword I set to acces my router settings and hence I'm not able to modify the network band.. (I'll try to find it again)

My computer is a "DELL G5 15 5500 - RVHTJ" and if I'm not mistaken the model of the wireless adapter is "Killer(R) Wi-Fi 6 AX1650i 160MHz Wireless Network Adapter (201NGW)"

For the router I'm not sure this is the correct number but I would say: CH7465MT-AT (it is a router for the Austrian company Magenta).

Best,

Sylven

Hello again.

After reseting my router I was able to modify the settings. Apparently my phone was on the 5Ghz band too. So when I connected my computer to the 2.4Ghz band my connection speed was of 70Mbps (and still 20-30 with the extender). I guess this explain my lower connection with the extender... (sorry for the trouble)

Is it normal that the difference between the 5 and 2.4Ghz is so big?

Thanks for your help.

@Sylven Hello,

Thanks a lot for your update.

Range extender's speed looks more reasonable if router's 2.4Ghz is around 70Mbps considering more wireless interference on 2.4Ghz.

You could consider a dual-band Wi-Fi range extender if you need stability as well as relative faster speed (compared with single band RE) at that Wi-Fi dead spot.

Yes 5Ghz band can be  multiple times faster than 2.4Ghz .5Ghz Link speed is normally 433/866 Mbps while 2.4G Wi-Fi link speed is normally150/300/450 Mbps, but 2.4Ghz has a bigger Wi-Fi coverage and some Wi-Fi clients only support 2.4Ghz.
