Model: Archer AX11000
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.2.3 Build 20210719 rel.14861(4555)

Hello,

I have purchased recently the Archer AX11000 v1.0 Gaming router, while owning the ArcherC5400X before.

I came across a serious limitation, at least for my setup/usage last night.

Under Security > Access Control > I have been white-listing all my devices MAC addresses. Unfortunately once I reached 64 white-listed devices, I get the message “Maximum entries exceeded.”

Can you please advise if there’s a way to increase the 64 devices limit? I own a lot of smart home devices and the amount will keep increasing going forward.

If that’s the hard limit and there’s no option to change it, I will consider returning the router, despite the fact that I have been absolutely satisfied so far with it.

Thank you,

John

This limit is hard coded into device's FW.

@terziyski long shot but worth asking, any chance limit will be increased in a future FW update?

In general a new FW release could increase this value.

It's up to TP-Link R&D to decide whether the device's hardware can handle greater value or not.

@terziyski  is correct, this limit is hardcoded, thus it cannot be increased now. But we do see others ask for similar, we have reported to the engineering team, they should consider if or this will be increased in future updates. We cannot give you a YES or NO answer now, if this is the feature you must have now, I guess you can return and buy one that already supports it.

@Kevin_Z

Can you please advise if same limitation applies for TP-Link Archer C5400X and AX6000?

I'm thinking to buy one of those, but can't find any evidence for the number of devices they support under access control.

In general I'm looking for a router with 8x Gigabit ports, largest WiFi coverage possible (doesn't have to support WiFi 6) and not having the 64 devices limit. If tp-link offers one, please let me know.

Update:

Just checked my Archer C5400X and same limitation applies.

Question now is if this applies to all TP-Link routers in general.

From what i have seen Asus Routers have the same limitation as well (it's clearly stated in the router's manual though)

Any feedback is welcome. Thank you.

Nope, we don't have one that supports more than 64 Access Control whitelist rules now.

The limitation, Is it due to device storage capacity or any other hardware component? Or is it just built in within the firmware and can be increased in the future?

Curious as I see same limit applying to other brands as well.

From my understanding, the limitation could be built-in within the firmware, and it could be increased by firmware recompilation. However, as you also mentioned that other brands have the same limitation also, so I think the engineers and developers may have more concerns about the device stability and performance by limiting it to be 64.

Just out of curiosity, are most of the devices in the network smart or iot devices? 64 is pretty a lot, are there more?

Yes majority are smart devices and there will be more going forward.

For example we have 2x Smart speakers per room, so taking into account only the speakers that's 12 devices.

If you add up smart lights/bulbs, PCs, mobile devices etc, you easily end up with 64++.

From what i understand the white-listed devices list should be checked only upon a device login attempt. If that's the case, don't see how this can affect performance or stability of the router, except maybe taking a bit longer to authenticate the device.

I had already sent an email to TP Link support, before opening this thread, and they reached out to me last night.

This is their feedback for reference:

"We can upgrade the firmware to increase the max amount of the access control list. And for your needs, I will feed back to the related team, they will value the necessity."
