Model: Tapo C200
Hardware Version: V3
Firmware Version: 1.3.0

Hello,

I have problem with playing video files recorded by Tapo C200 camera.

I recorded video on SD card as continuous recording mode.

When I finished then I switched off the camera and put out the SD card and copy its content to my laptop.

There are many mp4 files with 262 144 kB (see attached .png).

Files has names as: xxxxxxxx_000000_tp00008.mp4, xxxxxxxx_000000_tp00009.mp4, and so on.

I try to open each files with VLC player and other players but neither could open them. Why?

Do I need a specific player, or codec, or what else?

I formatted also the sd card but the problem persists.

Any ideas ?

Kind Regards,

George

Hello  @gandrian

Thank you for raising this question. There is a QA of Tapo camera that can help to answer your concern.

General Questions about the Tapo Camera

Q5.3 What can I do if the video recordings from the SD card cannot be played on a computer?

A: The SD card will be divided into multiple folders automatically once formatted on the Tapo App, and all of the folders will be named as xxxxxxxx_000000_tp00001.mp4, xxxxxxxx_000000_tp00002.mp4, and so on. This folder or clip cannot be played or opened as there is no recording in it. The recorded videos will fill in these folders one by one.

After the video is filled in, the file will be renamed to start with the date and time, like the second file on your screenshot, 20230202(date)_073635(time)_tp00000.mp4

  @gandrian

You can see that there are two types of MP4 files in the folder. One type starts with a date, such as 20230202_073635_tp00000.mp4, this is the file that has a video recorded, it can be opened to play.

The other type starts with xxxxxxxx, such as xxxxxxxx_000000_tp00001.mp4. This is a blank file, no video has been recorded yet, so it cannot be opened for playback. Keep the camera running, the recorded video will fill into these files gradually, the file name will change and can be opened once there is any content recorded in it.
