Hello TP Link Friends,

I am just learning all the ins and outs of having a Wi-Fi 6 Router. Until now, I have not really been interested in my connection speed, but my buddy Archer AX11000 recently moved in and I cannot stop wanting to see what he can do. This was caused by a revolutionary increase in Internet speeds that started a fire of curiosity in me. After a little while I noticed the USB ports on the side and did some thinking about how handy it would be to have a HDD hooked up to it and not have to sit with it balanced on my lap. The dream is to actually get an SSD now, but baby steps. Anyway, after some shenanigans learning how to properly connect to the HDD through the router I began transferring some things around. Here in lies my topic. I am confused why it is taking so long and going so slow. I mean, I am down to 2.4KB/s Download and 0.14KB/s upload at times. For a 75Gb transfer it is saying it will take over a day. I am baffled. I thought this Archer AX11000 was supposed to be a super dooper network trooper. But I am just about ready to unhook the HDD and bring it back over to my couch where I have seen it achieve write speeds of 70MB/s and better.

The specs of the set-up:

Laptop > Panasonic Toughbook CF-54 - Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-6300U CPU @ 2.40GHz   2.50 GHz - 8.0GB RAM - 64bit Operating System - x64 based system

Laptop Operating System > Windows 10 Pro 22H2

Laptop Primary SSD > OCZ Agility 3 - 150GB

Laptop Wireless Connection via > TP-Link Wireless MU-MIMO USB Adapter using 5.8GHz Wi-Fi Network at - 100% Signal Strength

Router is of course Archer AX11000 V1

Using the Archer USB-A 3.0 Port to connect a Western Digital My Passport Ultra rated at 5Gbps interface

The Archer is at 10% CPU usage and 41% Memory usage

The IP of the laptop is entered as a priority address, and there is nothing else running on the network, just me typing this post. Laptop network usage is at 1% capacity.

The connection between Archer and Laptop Tx/Rx is sitting at 520/867 Mbps steady, yet I am only seeing top level numbers of 50Mbps Network I/O and they only peak there for a moment or two then go back to an average 9Mbps or less. It all depends on the file type it is transferring. I know I am on a dated system, but it really is a snappy rig most days. It is faster and smoother than my FZ-55 Toughbook which is newer by five years. I have never had issues with transfers via USB or regular internet downloads. It is just this Local Network Drive set up that is lagging.

This is my first time setting up an FTP connection, so it is entirely possible I do not have things done properly. I have read the threads here that relate and tried some of the troubleshooting tips to no avail. Is this just the nature of an FTP? Or is there anything I can do to encourage a faster transfer? Any and all tips and tricks are welcomed with appreciation and intent to try them. I will try changing a few things after the transfer and run it again to see if things change.

Hello @Bourneon

Thank you for reaching out to us and welcome to the TP-Link community.

Are you saying the Tx/Rx between Archer and Laptop is sitting at 520/867 Mbps steady? This sounds not a good link rate if the laptop is connected to the 5GHz network. Can you please confirm again what is the model of the wireless adapter that you are using on the laptop to connect to the AX11000? Be sure the driver for the adapter is up-to-date.

What if you connect the laptop to the AX11000 with an Ethernet cable, and try to transfer files from the laptop to the USB HDD attached to the AX11000, please show us what is the download and upload speed.

Can I also have the brand and model of the USB HDD?

  @Kevin_Z Hello Kevin,

Thanks for replying. I have had some progress with improving speeds when connected to the USB HDD via wireless. After reading your comments I did some sniffing around on my laptop. Originally I was using a TP-Link T3U Plus V1 USB Wi-Fi adapter. I found that the built in card on the laptop has 5.8GHz but it was disabled. Since enabling it I have better speeds, but nothing too impressive. The 867/867 is holding pretty steady via the built in Wi-Fi NIC, and sites load faster now. It did need an update and that helped some too. The biggest culprit of interrupting the speeds was a conflict between the TP-Link built in Trend Mirco antivirus and the Nord VPN "Threat & Web Protection". Disabling the Nord protection I managed to get much better transfer speeds. Another improvement came when I did a full Windows reset, though it also came with a new glitch. I will make another post for it as even a level 2 Windows tech hasn't been able to figure it out.

As for the USB HDD issue, after all the tweaks I am now uploading a file from laptop to HDD on router at a steady 5.2 to 6.7 MBps. A 5GB file took 19 minutes to upload. On the reverse, downloading from the USB HDD on the router to the laptop I get varied speeds depending on the file type and size. PDFs come in at approx. 40-70 MBps.

The USB HDD is a Western Digital My Passport Ultra 1TB. Connecting the HDD to my laptop via USB it can move data at 50 to 70 MBps with peaks around 100 MBps. Being new to a setup through the router, I do not know what to expect as "good numbers". Can you advise what a good benchmark is that the Archer AX11000 should be able to achieve? Overall, I am satisfied with the improvement. I would always like more but I think I have found the ceiling given the technologies in the laptop and the HDD.

I will work on getting a speed measurement using an Ethernet cable into the Archer and post that. I am curious to know what the difference is. I have to bring a ladder in from the shop to get up to it though. I put the router near the top of the vaulted ceiling for a measure of security and signal reach and just took the ladder out the other day. Once I have it back in I will do some testing with a different SSD as well. If you can think of anything else that might be needed to be done while I am up there please let me know. I don't want to be going back and forth with the ladder.

Anyway, thanks again for your interest. Any tips are appreciated. The new issue with the network file storage might be up your alley. When I get some time to post it I will drop the link here.

@Bourneon

Thank you very much for your detailed information and confirmation.

I'm happy to see that the USB transfer speed gets a little better after disabling the NordVPN Protection on the laptop.

But I also agree that the transfer speed is still not as good as expected. And according to the lab testing, the USB read and write speed is expected to be a maximum of ~50-80MBps based on different testing methods and environments.

Since the transfer speed of your router is still not good, we would like to have a specialist look into this further via email. Please check your mailbox later, and let us know if the issue is resolved.

  Hello @Kevin_Z,

I just wanted to update you as to my progress. I am still having issues with a mystery permissions issue between the router and laptop. I have most functionality but still cannot get the network drives and folders to show properly in the "Network" window. There are other glitches that come and go too. Re-imaging the laptop didn't help and it is presenting the same symptoms on two machines. Being cabled in makes no impact other than faster transfer speeds.

As for the slow USB external drive transfer speeds from the laptop, this is solved. Though turning of the Nord helped, it was not the solution. It was only a reduction in the demand on the main SSD transfer. The real boost came when I installed Intel RST suite. I do not know why it helped because as I understood it RST was only needed for RAID support. However, with it in the system I went from a benchmark of 50 MB/s sequential write to 427 MB/s sequential write. Talk about an amazing difference.

I now am uploading to the network USB drive at a consistent 40-50 MB/s with a network load of 310 Mbps Network I/O or roughly 36% capacity. I find things go faster and more consistently if I package everything into a RAR file before transport. Without it, there are some file types that still bring the system down to the KBps range. Then it spikes up for .pdfs, drops for .m4a, and so on.

Anyways, just thought it might help you with future troubleshooting efforts with others. Thanks for the help.
