Model: Deco S4
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version: 1.1.1 Build20230201 Rel. 37427

I am experiencing intermittent "connected without internet" conditions on some mobile devices (samsung phones and tablets) since I have started using the Deco S4.

My setup is as follows: Fibre -> TPLink modem -> Deco S4 (Main) (all wired).  -> 2 x satellite S4 (Wifi)

The S4's are configured in AP mode, since I have the existing TP Link modem.  I have been using the TPLink modem alone for many years without any problems.  I wanted to extend the range of my network - hence the Deco units.  I have disable the Wifi on the TpLink modem.  The Deco S4 network seems stable and signal quality between units are good.  I have +- 20 clients connected across the three units.  This all seems to work file - the units always report stable connection.  However, my mobile phone (and some other mobile devices) would occasionally (a few times per day) lose internet connection although the Wifi connection is still stable.  All other clients still have internet access.  The only way to restore intenet on the device is to turn off the wifi on my phone (device) and to turn it back on.  Internet connectivity is immediately restored.  The is, however, not an acceptable solution since I do not always notice the loss of wifi internet and the device will seamlessly switch to using mobile data which depletes my mobile data contract.

Note that before using the Deco S4 units, using the same TPLink modem, I have not experienced any such issues with the exact same mobile devices.  The only "new thing" in this setup is the Deco S4 units.  I have tried router mode as well (by taking out the TPLink modem) but with the same results.

This does not seem to be a new problem and has been reported across almost all Deco units and models for many years:

A quick search on the forums:

Has there been any solution to this problem?

Hi, Welcome to the community.

May I know the model number of your TP-Link main modem router?

How about the model numbers of the Samsung phones and tablets?

Here are some suggestions for your reference:

1. Disable "Beamforming" under Deco APP>More>Advanced.

2. Turn off "Mesh Technology" for Samsung phones and tablets.

By the way, the firmware 1.1.1 of Deco S4 supports connection preference, could you please select the preferred bands of Samsung devices to 2.4Ghz Band to see whether the connection could be more stable:

How to select a preferred signal source on the Deco App

Thank you very much and best regards.

  @David-TP

Hi David, thanks for the response.  My week was a bit busy so sorry for the delay in responding.

I had remembered incorrectly that my router was a TPLinik router - it is in fact a DLInk router.  Model number DIR-825 G1.  I have been using this router for many years without any issues or connectivity problems.

My phone is a Samsun A32. The other devices in our house are Samsung S5 mini, Samsung Tab A8 - these are being used by other family members so I cannot monitor them as closely.  My phone (the A32) however, still loses internet connectivy on a regular basis (a few times per day)

Regarding your suggestions:

1.  I will disable beam-forming and have a look, but I am not hopeful since for nobody else with this problem has this solution ever been successful.

2. A cannot disable Mesh technology.  That is the whole reason why I have bought the Deco uints - to have a mesh network and increase my coverage.  Disabling this defeats the whole purpose of having this product,

3. I have already completely disabled the 5GHz band on the Deco units so I am only working on the 2,4GHz band for a while now.

Here are some more examples of recent occurrences of this issue:

1. While watching a YT video, my phone suddenly lost internet connectivity.  Wifi signal was still strong and I was not moving around at the time.

2. I left my phone next to my bed in the evening, where it has a strong Wifi signal and was still connected on the internet.  The next morning, the phone was still connected to the Wifi but with no internet.

In both cases turning the wifi off and on immediately restored the internet connectivity.  In both cases the phone was not moving around and was in an area with very good Wifi signal.  I have checked the IP address of the phone in the state and it still had an IP address, which did not change when the internet connection was restored.  Activity on the phone therefore also does not seem to make difference.

I reiterate that I have never had any similar issue before installing the DECO S4 units.

Regards,

Niki

Hi, thanks for the update.

Since D-link DIR-825 G1 is also a Wi-Fi router, if possible, it is suggested to unplug the D-Link router and replace it with Deco completely, then put Deco S4 into the wireless router model.

As for the "Mesh Technology", some devices do not support this feature and it might act weird when receiving Deco's roaming request. This on/off option is for individual devices and would not mess up with the whole network.

Wait for your reply and best regards.

  @David-TP

Hi David, thanks for the quick reply!

I have disabled the DLink Wifi Router's wifi - and the Deco's are connected to the router via cable.  So there is only one Wifi network: the network created by the Decos.

When I initially installed the Deco's I did remove the router completely and used the Decos in router mode (the way I understand they were meant to be used).  I had the same issues as I have now (loss of internet connection).  A colleague (who also bought the Deco units) suggested that I use the Decos in AP mode with my existing router since he also had issues without his normal router.  My problems do seem to be less in AP mode than they were in Router mode, but this might be subjective.

I can revert back to router mode but that takes some effort since I have to re-configure my network (I have some fixed IP addresses and moving the DHCP from my router to the Decos require that I set these up again).  Since I have seen the same issues in both modes (with and without the D-Link router) it does not seem to be sensitive to the mode and I would rather stay with the mode I am using now.

I will try disabling the mesh technology only for my phone as you suggested and see if it makes a difference.

Thanks!

Niki

  @Niki73

I have disabled the mesh technology for my phone.  On my phone I have disabled all advanced setting I could find around WiFi.  I also disabled Randomized MAC.  None of this has made any difference.  I still routine get the situation where the phone is still connected ot the Wifi but has not internet.  I have made screenshots of one such occurrence.

The first screenshot shows my phone's WiFi settings once it has lost internet connectivity.  Note that it is connected to the WiFi with a strong signal.

The next picture showns the client information from the Deco app while in this state.  The Dece still sees the phone connected with a strong signal.  Note there is no traffic between the Deco and the phone.

I then simply disconnect from the WiFi and reconnect.  And now the phone is connected with internet.

The Deco also now shows traffic between it and hte phone.

This keeps on happening regularly - it just now happened while I was typing this message.

I am out of ideas...

Regards,

Niki

  @Niki73 Hello,

Did you or TP-Link support find an answer to your CPU hitting 100%. I have issue where my cell phones will prompt that Wi-Fi has lost connection and give a choice to continue using Wi-Fi or switch to the Data connection. The TP-Link Performance page shows the CPU Load regularly going from around 15% to 100%. Haven't tird a stop watch to time the occuances yet. First, I am going to try some of the settings suggested here to see if it helps.
