Official Release Support Customizing Password and Encryption Type on Range Extenders

Dear TP-Link range extender users,
We are excited to inform you about a significant enhancement made to our range extenders in recent weeks. We are pleased to introduce a new feature that empowers you to personalize the password and encryption type for your extended network. This customization option enables you to further strengthen the security and tailor the network settings according to your preferences.
Having a different password for the extender compared to the router offers several benefits:
Enhanced Security
Using a different password for the extender adds an extra layer of security to your network. It prevents unauthorized access to your network by ensuring that anyone wishing to connect to the extended network needs to enter a separate password.
Access Control
With a unique password for the extender, you have more control over who can access your network. You can provide the router password to trusted users while maintaining a separate password for the extender, allowing you to manage and restrict access as needed.
Flexibility
Different passwords for the router and the extender provide flexibility in granting access rights. You can grant access to guests or temporary users without giving them access to your primary network by sharing the extender's password.

How to set up a different password on the range extender?
Here we take RE815XE for example:
1. Log into the web UI per How to log into the web management page of the range extender.
2. Go to Settings>Wireless>Extended Network.
3. Change the SSID, password, and security mode if necessary. Then Click "Save".
With more exciting updates to share with you, We've also implemented the following features alongside the same firmware versions:
Host Wireless Password Detection Alerts
If the configuration is unsuccessful due to an incorrect password, a clear notification will be presented to indicate the issue.
Web Interface Display Optimization
-
Add Wireless Negotiation Rates.
You could view wireless negotiation rates from the extender to the host router, and from Wireless Clients to the extender directly on the web management page. It helps check whether the extender and mobile clients are positioned in optimal places and troubleshoot the network speed issues.
-
Add Physical and Virtual MAC addresses on the clients.
Making it easier to configure the Access Control/MAC Filtering on the Host router.

@David-TP
I regret buying a TP-Link product again. This a bare minimum security feature. I purchased RE305 to extend an existing shared wifi network in my apartment and using the same host password is surely a no go for me. Do you have any plan to extend this to RE305. Otherwise, I consider returning the product.

@David-TP I have the TP-Link AC1900 WiFi ExtenderTP-Link AC1900 WiFi Extender. I need it to have a unique password. I have devices in the extended area that cannot have special characters in the password. My network it extends to does and needs special characters. Any chance for a firmware update soon?

Is there any plans to update this feature for the RE550 Range Extender? If not, I need to return it and get one that already has the feature.

Hi,
Are you saying that when you select one of the "Security" options like "WPA2-PSK" or "WPA/WPA2-Personal" etc, then there is no entry field shown into which you could enter a password?
Please verify that the actual model name of the range extender you have is "RE815XE V1.x".
Also, have you already checked whether the password entry field exists when you do it via the regular web interface, like shown in the first post of this forum thread?

Thanks...I choose WPA/WPA2-Personal and it did ask for a password..so that's fixed. Thanks
Now the extender connects and disconnect freuently....like every 30 seconds??? I put it on automatic reconnect so it will reconnect. No idea what to do next.
Any ideas?

So, everything worked fine when you had the AXE5400 set to "Same as main network", but after you set it to "WPA/WPA2-Personal" the AXE5400 started disconnecting your phone every 30 seconds?
Can you please test if the extender goes back to normal when you revert it to the setting "Same as main network"?
Did your phone ask you to enter a new password when you tried to connect to the "hotspot_EXT_DM" after you changed the password on the extender?
By the way, since you have a modern smartphone you might want to set Security to "WPA2/WPA3-Personal", since "WPA/WPA2-Personal" is mainly meant to be used for backwards compatibility with really old wireless devices.

I've got a TL-WA850RE_V7 that is upgraded to the beta firmware but I am still not able to change the password to be anything different than my main network password. Even my web UI looks different than the one pictured in the original post. Can you please advise? My web UI does not have the "Status", "Wireless", "Network" etc options down the left, it instead looks like this:
Funny thing is, I'm positive I was able to use a different password with this extender when I first bought it years ago and now it's not letting me. I also have a RE550 and can't change it's password either, but it's not on the list in the original post.
