TD-VG3631 cant see NTFS drive in USB port
TD-VG3631 cant see NTFS drive in USB port

Region : Australia

Model : TD-VG3631

Hardware Version : V1

Firmware Version : 0.6.0 1.0 v0001.0 Build 130413 Rel.52459n

ISP : Exetel

I recently purchased the TD-VG6361 and was able to set it up for everything just fine, including voip for PennyTel & Mynetfone, in a matter of minutes. All working great :)

Now trying to setup the USB for both FTP and Media Player. If I plug in a 16gb USB Key (FAT32 formatted) into either USB port, all works fine, my Media Player sees it and able to play movie files. I can FTP to it from externally and locally. All good so far. I plug in a 500GB USB Hard Drive and no go. On the USB Mass Storage page it shows up a TOSHIBA HD but unable to see size of HD, etc. The HD is of course formatted NTFS, I cant format it FAT32. I decided to format my 16GB USB key to NTFS. Done and copied a couple of files to it. Plugged it in and now cant FTP to it and my Media player cant see it, again the USB Mass Storage page it shows up a MEMOREX usb device but unable to see its size, etc. I then formatted the USB key back to its original FAT32, copied the same files to it and bingo, all is seen and working again. FAT32 only works with 32GB drives or smaller and thats way to small for my needs.

What needs to be done to get the unit to see NTFS formatted drives as it clearly says the unit is compatible with both FAT32 & NTFS ? I have the latest firmware.

Thanks for listening,
cm

Hi.
Does your 500GB USB Hard Drive have a power adapter? If so, you need to use the power adapter to power on the hard drive when the USB device is connected to TL-VG3631.

BTW, what is the model number of the 500GB USB Hard Drive? Is it 3TB? Or GPT?

And if you connect 500GB USB Hard Drive to the computer, can the computer recognize all the files?

Thanks for your response, but no, the 500gb HD does not have its own power supply nor facilities for such, its a small WD 2.5" laptop drive in a small Samsung USB case. These get power from the USB cable only. The HD spins up fine when plugged in and if its formatted FAT32 (found a Toshiba utility that can format a 500gb HD to FAT32) its all works great but if formatted NTFS, it doesnt see any files on the drive. Formatted either way, my PC see the unit and its files.

I have repeated the above with 16gb USB KEY drive or Thumb drive, what ever you want to call them, with the same results. Works fine if FAT32 formatted, but no files seen if NTFS formatted. I have tried 3-4 different USB hard drives in different USB cases, identical result from all, all works fine if the drive is FAT32 and nothings works if NTFS.

All the above clearly shows to me that the TD-VG3631 does not work with a NTFS formatted HD connected to it, which is opposite to advertising and specifications listed for the unit. I cant use a FAT32 formatted HD used as Media storage because FAT32 has a max 4GB file size limit. Also, FAT32 is slower than NTFS and NTFS is far more space efficient than FAT32 on drives greater than 137GB.

Hi.
My hard drive with NTFS format can be recognized without any issue.

when you use utility to change 16gd USB KEY drive or Thumb drive or the 500gb HD to be NTFS formatted, will the hard drive also be locked by the utility?
After you change their format to NTFS, do you still need to use the utility to unlock and identify the hard drive when it is plugged in the computer? Or they will be recognized automatically by the computer without utility?

No the drives are not locked when NTFS formatted and are auto recognised by Windows when plugged into my or other PC's. The USB Key is formatted with Windows default formatter to either FAT32 or NTFS. The 500GB drive was natively formatted NTFS a year or so ago and I have used it many times in various Windows PC without an issue, as expected. I plugged it into the modem and on the Modems USB Mass Storage page it shows up but no data for it. The pic below shows a 160GB USB drive FAT32 formatted (with the Toshiba format program) and the other a NTFS formatted drive (using Windows default formatter).
