By default the router ports are closed - you can open a particular port or port range (port forwarding / virtual servers) if you need to access a particular service running in your local network from an external network.

If this was helpful click once on the arrow pointing upward. If this solves your issue, click once the star to mark it as a "Recommended Solution".

I'm just trying stop my kids from using VPN, I was told to closing these ports: UDP 51820, UDP 1194, UDP 500, 1701,4500.............. how do I make sure these ports don't open? so VPN doesn't work anymore?

Thanks

My post was related to the incoming connections to your router from an outside networks.

If you want to block outgoing connections you'll have to buy a higher end router which has a HomeShiled feature.

Although, if you want to prevent (for example) using VPN clients by your kids for gaming, a business router with an advanced firewall policies is better.

With this type of router you'll have more granular control over the outgoing connections used in your local network.

Can you please recommend a router with HomeSheild, provide me with a link to the manual page were it shows that outgoing connection can be blocked. I can't seem to find any.

I found this link (HomeShield | TP-Link) .... for example the Download for Archer AX72 Pro | TP-Link doesn't have a way to block outgoing connection. Can you please recommend a few HomeShield routers, they also seem easier to use compared to business routers.

If I go with a business router like ER706W, how would I use the firewall to help me stop VPN compared to a HomeSheild router?

Here's the ER706W user guide - Part 8 - Configuring Firewall.

Here's an example of ER605 tips for configuring its firewall.

If you choose a business grade router, it's better to post your questions in the business community for more detailed answers.
