Hi All!

 

I'm about to get full fibre.

 

Currently running a powerline network of WPA8631P adapters. Only connection I care about is to my Office PC - and that's currently around 380Mbps. I am a casual gamer, so sometimes download very large amounts of data and want my ping as low as possible without the need to run ethernet.

 

I beleive I have a couple of upgrade paths ... The advertised maximum throughputs are:

 

WPA8631P - 1300Mbps

PA9020P - 2000Mbps

PG2400P - 1428Mbps

 

So, I have the option of swapping out my WPA8631P with a PA9020P kit... but if I do I am wondering if there's a way I can estimate the potential benefit before I buy? Is it a linear relationship - 380 x 2000 / 1300 = 585 Mbps or am I likely already showing the limits of my cabling?

 

I could also go the g.hn route which I understand is incompatible with my current kit... Looks like throughput it likely going to be similar, but would there be a noticable improvement in latency?

Yes, if you are going to get fiber Internet, then either have it installed right where you need the full speed or install an Ethernet cable from the fiber terminal to your place.

 

I doubt an upgrade of the Powerline adapters could get you more than 50% improvement (60Mbps + 50% = 90Mbps), even in the best case. In worst case it might not improve at all.

Hi,

 

Is the 380 Mbps you are reporting the number you see next to the arrow shown in the tpPLC Utility or is that the actual data throughput you've measured?

Honestly didn't even occur to me to check that! I figured the number I was being shown in tpPLC would be consistent with data performance. My current internet is just 2mbps so I'd have never achieved the limit in my current state, but with iperf I can confirm throughput is a miserly 50-60mbps with either ethernet or WiFi to both powerline adapters... So, I guess even if I did upgrade the benefits would be minimal? At this point I have half a mind to ask the Engineer to install the fibre directly to my office and let the rest of the house compete with Mesh or Powerline bandwidth... I'm the only one in the house who really cares about the extra speed.

Thanks very much for the support here! I'd have to route the ethernet to the other side of the house - I think the run would be something like 30m so may be feasible as long as there are no temperature issues I guess. Think I'll just chance my luck with the Engineer :)
