For this feature to work, all Deco units in Deco mesh must support it. If feature disappeared after adding M4 V2 to Deco mesh, delete that unit from Deco mesh in Deco app and feature will reappear.

 

From Deco models similar to M4 I would recommend the following that have Connection Preference feature for all their hardware versions: M5 and M9 Plus.

I see. For your friend, if they can return M4 V2 back to seller, that would be the easiest option. They can buy M5/M9 Plus set instead, or get WiFi6 capable X55 set. Deco X55 also supports connection preference.

Thanks. I have had mine for only 6 months so the concern is if M4 Hardware V4 is supported (from what I have read) how to you update or even get that version !!!! As it was working, therefore it must have been removed in an update so for me paying out again for new units less than 6 months old would be ridiculous unless TP are going to reimburse me.

You combined two issues in one post, that causes confusion.

 

Recommendation to send back M4 V2 is for your friend. M4 V2 is not supposed to have Connection Preference feature. That feature comes with firmware 1.6.* but latest official firmware for M4 V2 is 1.5.8. 

Even if your friend can get some customized not yet official firmware that supports this feature, upgrading to official firmware will disable it. For your friend, the easiest and most worry-free solution would be to send M4 V2 back to retailer and get different Deco model, the one that supports Connection Preference feature for all its mainstream hardware versions.

Deco M4 V2 with firmware 1.5.8 is not supposed to have Connection Preference feature. That feature comes with firmware 1.6, but will or will not firmware 1.6 be released for M4 V2 is not clear.

I am perplexed at how your Deco mesh have had Connection Preference feature. On this forum you may find topic after topic from people owning M4 V2 asking when that feature will be available and upset that it is not.

 

I am going to completely speculate here, but the only way I can imagine your M4 V2 Deco mesh could have had that feature is because it were running on unofficial customized firmware provided by TP-Link Support, with release version earlier than 1.5.8. After you've updated firmware to official 1.5.8, the feature disappeared. 

 

I would love to see what TP-Link Support is going to say about that. If they provide link to that "special" firmware, I am going to bookmark it.
