Model: Deco S4
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version:

I have a Virgin Media Superhub 3 on 500Mb. I often have dropouts and connectivity issues upstairs. I've been considering the S4 Deco as it's reasonably priced in the UK's leading high street catalogue store but never having had a mesh setup, I've looked at this community before buying. There seems to be a few threads relating to the Deco S4 having low speeds with the Virgin Hub3 in bridge mode. This is putting me off purchasing the kit. What does the community think, is there an issue here or a more favourable option with an alternative TP-Link or alternative provider that is reasonably priced?

Hi, Deco S4 is capable of 500m/s. For 5GHz, within proper distance, the expected 5GHz speed could be 300-500m/s.

For the satellite Deco, it might depend on whether they are connected to the main Deco via Ethernet cables or by WiFi.

Virgin Hub3 in bridge mode---main Deco S4---<cable>---satellite S4#1----<cable>----satellite S4#2

The wireless speed on the satellite Deco is almost the same as the speed from the main Deco.

  • For wireless Backhaul, the wireless speed from satellite Deco S4 might be 50-70% of the speed from main Deco.

Why is my satellite Deco unit not getting the same speed as the main Deco?

Thank you very much and best regards.

  @David-TP  Thank you for the superb and prompt explanation. That's explained the concerns I've seen on other posts. I didn't plan on cabling to the satelites, although I do have a cat v cable runnig to upsatirs from the router to an appliance that I could tap into. But to be honest, even wireless at a 50-70% speed loss would still be amazing upstairs compared to the current situation with Hub3 dropping out constantly. Plus I could have WIFi in the garden of the weather picks up. I'll definitely make a mesh purchase this weekend ;)

  @Glesga2014

Also compare prices for Deco S7 and Deco M4 - they are very similar to Deco S4 when it comes to performance.

If you prefer more compact form factor, check prices for Deco M5.

PS. Whatever you choose, you should "tap into" Ethernet cable for your Satellite Deco.
