TL-WR841N V12.0 as access point

Model: TL-WR841N_EU
Hardware Version: V12
Firmware Version:

I have a Huawei B535, which is connected to the internet via ADSL and is running on its default settings with IP range 192.168.8.X

I also have a TL-WR841N(EU) V12.0 which is not on the internet and also on default settings with IP range 192.168.0.X

Finally, I have a device with an IP address of 192.168.0.200 which cannot be changed, and a laptop which connects to the WR841N and gets an address via DHCP.

Is it possible to configure the TL-WR841N as an access point so that it connects to the internet via the Huawei B535 and the device on 192.168.0.200 can still talk to the WR841N? It would also be necessary for the DHCP server in the WR841N to be issuing addresses in the 192.168.0.100-192.168.0.199 range as usual for the laptop.

Thank you

Hi,

This cannot be done by changing settings on the TL-WR841N.

You will need to have access to the Huawei B535's configuration webpage.

In case you do have the login credentials to the Huawei B535, then change the LAN network IP address of the Huawei B535 from 192.168.8.1 to 192.168.0.1 and set the LAN IP address of the TL-WR841N to 192.168.0.2 or any other unused IP address in the 192.168.0.x range and then everything should be fine.

@woozle That's really helpful, thank you. I do have the login for the Huawei so I will give that a go.

Do you think changing the netmask to 255.255.0.0 would also work? I realise this isn't the correct netmask for a Class C :)

Thanks

Do you mean changing the netmask of the Huawei to 255.255.0.0? I'd say the best way is to just test if it works or not.

But note that if the device with the fixed IP address of 192.168.0.200 also has its subnet mask hard fixed to 255.255.255.0, then it would only be able to communicate with other devices that also have IP addresses in the 192.168.0.x range.

I suppose it would help if the Huawei router supports WDS, I think it may.

Let's not mix things up here.

Access Point mode means the TL-WR841N is connected via Ethernet cable to the Huawei router (LAN port to LAN port) and all devices work in the same IP subnet.

WDS would mean the TL-WR841N is connected via wireless connection to the Huawei router and all devices work in the same IP subnet as well. This would not change anything with regards to the IP address issue.

Of course, you could also just use the TL-WR841N in router mode as it's normally intended to be used. Just connect a cable from one of the Huawei router's LAN ports to the WAN port of the TL-WR841N. The network of the Huawei router would then use the 192.168.8.x address range and the TL-WR841N would use the 192.168.0.x address range and there would be no issue with connecting the device with the fixed IP address 192.168.0.200 to it. The only drawback of this arrangement would be that client devices that are connected to the Huawei router are not able to access the client devices that are connected to the TL-WR841N.

All good points, much appreciated.

Unfortunately the physical layout is such that a cable between the routers is not possible, so a wireless solution is needed.

Thanks

Check this post for using WR841N in range extender mode. In HW v12 most probably a WDS feature is implemented.

If this was helpful click on the arrow pointing upward to make it blue. If this solves your issue, click the star to make it blue and mark the post as a "Recommended Solution".
