HI All

I have a Deco M5 attached to a Sky router - 500mb. we then have a further 3 M5s throughout the house, currently none are hardwired.

Our house used to be two cottages and has been made one property so there is a very thick (3-4 foot) stone wall right down the middle.

I got some advice and was told to run an Ethernet cable from the main deco to one of the other ones on the other side of this wall which i have tried but it is now telling me that of the other two that are connected over WiFi are still showing a weak signal (20mb).

What do i do? It is driving me mad that i cant get decent coverage throughout the house.

Many thanks

Hi, welcome to the community.

Did you run the Ethernet cable directly from the main Deco M5 to one of the satellite M5?

Would there be any network switch used for the cable extension? If yes, can I have its model number?

How long is the Ethernet cable by the way?

For more details about the Ethernet Backhaul of Deco, it is also suggested to refer to General questions about Ethernet Backhaul feature on your Deco (especially Q5 and Q6).

Thank you very much and best regards.

It sounds like they are still trying to connect to the main Deco and not the hardwired one.

You can manually set it by tapping on the Deco you want to change on the main screen of the Deco app and then:

- Tap again on the Deco in the list

- Tap on Connection Preference

- Tap on the toggle next to Auto

- Select the Deco on the correct side of the wall

Hi

thank you for your message.
yes the Ethernet cable is run straight from the main deco to another. The other two are on the WiFi. On the app it says that one is connected via the main deco and the other via the one that is hard wired.
The cable is cat6 and 25m long. There is no switch.
I am trying to upload a picture but can't do it!!

  @richpriest

hi thanks for your message. The config map is showing that of the two WiFi decos one is connecting to the main deco and the other is connecting to the hardwired one.

Would it be worth buying a better/more up to date  deco and plugging that into the router to make in the main deco? Or would that be a waste of time ?

Hi, Thank you very much for your update.

Is the network topology like this:

the bold yellow line means Ethernet cable, the dotted green line means Wi-Fi

Deco M5 is good enough for 500m/s and before updating to other models, we could try some other suggestions first:

1. Please check on the Deco APP to make sure the #2 is on the Ethernet backhaul and the network map on the Deco APP is like the above picture.

2. Since there is already a Sky router, please set Deco M5 into Access point mode.

How to set up Deco to work in Access Point mode

3. turn off the 2.4GHz band under the WiFi network on the Deco APP.

4. Test the wireless speed on the Deco #3 and #4 again to see how much 5ghz speed on these two Deco units.

Wait for your reply and best regards.

  @David-TP

HI

So sorry it has taken so long to reply. I have set it up as you have pictured it. With regards the 2.4GHz is the section you are talking about in the Band section to the advanced WiFi settings? Do i just switch it to 5GHz only?

As i said it is set up as follows

- Main Deco (attached to the Sky Router) in the play room.

- Hardwired to this is the one in the Dining Room

- The one in the Boot Room is picking up its signal from the Dining Room and is showing a Weak signal

- Finally the one in the kitchen is picking up its signal from the main deco in the playroom and is also weak.

Your image is correct as to the set up except there is also a thick wall (originally an external wall) between the main deco and the kitchen.

On a sepperate note how do you upload images on this site?? It would be so much easier to explain if i could send you screenshots of the Deco app.

Thanks

John Russell
