Hello

Does anyone knows why as soon I enable the VPN feature on my deco x20 all my deco network become unstable and the devices connected to the VPN barely can navigate through the internet?

I have a nordvpn subscription, when used via app it's fast and works as expected, but as soon I use it in the router everything becomes very slow. Devices that connect via VPN barely have access to internet, router losses network connection... Basically everything becomes unusable.

Is there any magic setup which I am not seeing? If not then this feature its just trash.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Thanks

Hi, Are you able to constantly reproduce this issue? Have you noticed the Deco X20 turned flashing red when it dropped out of the internet connection?

If VPN client is disabled, Deco X20 is working as expected right?

- I sent a beta firmware for Deco X20_V3 which might help with the current issue. Please try to install this beta to see whether it helped.

Thank you very much and best regards.

Hi David

I can't consistently reproduce the issue, but is a fact that it tends to happen when I am adding OpenVPN clients or swapping between clients. Never noticed any red light flashing.

Usually deco is working fine when vpn is enabled or disabled. It just becomes really unstable when adding VPN clients and swapping between VPN.

The big issue resides in the devices that are connected through routers VPN... I have a list of devices that only uses the router with the VPN ( TVs, tablet, etc) the connection speed e really really slow... On the other devices not connected to VPN all works normally.

Today, without knowing why and what cause it, I just can't connect devices like tablets or smartphones to the WiFi via VPN on the router... it says no internet connection but, on TVs seem to be working (or perhaps it appears connected in the VPN clients list as connected and in reality they are not, hard to identify it)

I will try to use you beta for a few days and will let you know if it becomes better.

Thanks for the support

Hello David

Here is the follow up and my testings during the weekend.

Overall its stable and works way better than the latest deco x20 available release. Tts faster to connect to VPN, also the exchange through different VPN clients are faster now. Devices that are connect to deco x20 using VPN feature, now reacts better and also have faster connection and more stable, although I still feel its working way slower than it should.

I have a 250mbps connection provided through my ISP, it is stable and I also tested it heavily. Deco x20 is connected through wire to ISP router.

These are the facts I gather.

All tests were done with a wireless device 10cm away from the main deco x20 and these are the speed tests average:

deco x20 VPN off - Speed 110mbps

deco x20 VPN on -  Speed 15mbps

deco x20 VPN off + nordVPN app active - 110mbps

Another thing is that when using the VPN on the router the response speed when navigating through web is still very slow, also the waiting time to start streaming anything is much slower than using the nordVPN app.

Here at home I also have a different "competitor" router connected using the same setup as mentioned above and I have a steady 245mbps also the ISP router provides a steady 245mbps.

I am having the feeling that this deco devices are bottle necking my whole network. What is happening... are this devices limited or are they faulty? Im becoming pretty disappointed with it...

  @Caracolidis

Hi, Thank you very much for your time and patience.

I think it is the device limitation. Based on the previous feedback, the expected OpenVPN connection speed is about 15-30mbps. It is planned to add WireGuard VPN protocols which would greatly improve the VPN connection speed on the Deco and some models(like Deco X50/X55_V1/V1.2, Deco X20_V4, Deco X60_V3/V3.2/V4) already support this feature.

Best regards.

Hello

But still the overall speed of the deco even without VPN active, is somewhat questionable. It outputs 110mbps when the other routers here at home goes almost full ISP bandwidth? Cant exactly understand why... Is there anything strangulating the speed of the deco?

Do you have any insight to when that WireGard VPN feature will be added to the x20 v3?
