Model: Deco X50
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version:

Hello!

I want to use the 3-pack Deco X50 in access point mode and want to have a mesh wifi with one SSID where the seamless roaming works between the units flawlessly.

Can you answer the following questions?

1. Can the 2nd and 3rd Deco unit's backhaul ethernet connection be chained?

2. Can I use the free ports of the 2nd and the 3rd Deco for connection of copmuters to the network?

3. Can I connect the Deco units with a switch?

4. After any of the abovementioned network layout is set up and working good, can I add more Deco units (4th, 5th, ...) to this layout wirelessly?

5. At the and will the devices see each other, all of them will have internet access, and the wifi will have a seamless roaming function working?

Thank you for your help!

1. Yes.

2. Yes.

3. Yes, but switch should be compatible with Deco Ethernet backhaul protocol. Not all switches are. TP-Link unmanaged switch is usually best bet.

4. Yes.

5. Yes.

-----------------

Also, when running in Access Point mode, I would recommend connect them the way you have in Question 3:

Having all traffic passing through Main Deco like it is in Questions 1 and 2 may cause performance issues with Main Deco and is not necessary. Especially, if you plan to go over 4-5 Deco units.

Also, there is undocumented Deco mesh network resilliency feature that works when Deco runs in AP mode and all Deco connect the way I recommend. With my network layout, if you lose Main Deco (hardware failure, unplugged accidentally) one of hardwired Satellite Deco will temporarily and automatically take over Main Deco role, your WiFi mesh will keep providing network and Internet access until you rectify the issue with Main Deco.

If all traffic goes through Main Deco as in Q1 and Q2, losing it obviously means 100% outage for your WiFi mesh.

Thank you for the help!

It looks promising.

Is the TL-SG108E switch suitable for all the requirements off the 3 X50 units if they are connected to it with cable?

I think it should be fine, but description says it is "managed," so I can't be sure. If you have that switch already, you could try. If not and you don't have specific needs or preferences, unmanaged switch might be the better choice. I used to have "TP-Link 8 Port Gigabit Ethernet Network Switch (TL-SG1008D)" as a primary switch for my home LAN with Deco mesh.

Now that I am upgrading my home LAN to 2.5gigabit, I replaced it with "TP-Link TL-SG108S-M2 | 8-Port 2.5G Multi-Gigabit Unmanaged Network Switch".

Both switches work without issues with Deco mesh.

From the other hand, I like the idea of LED lights reporting port link speed on switch, that is very useful feature, so I would have tried your choice TL-SG108E if I were looking for a new gigabit switch for my household.
