Model: RE220   RE200   Archer AX12
Hardware Version: V3
Firmware Version: 1.0.11 Build 220805 Rel.55827n

I have an Archer AX12 Router serving the whole house, however it's wifi signal does not reliably extend to the front garage or the front door.

To get over this I have placed a RE220 extender near the front door which worked OK until recently. The extender is running in Mesh mode so it has the same network address as the Archer making it hard to distinguish where the wifi signals are coming from.

The error message the RE220 is intermittently showing is: too far from the router, its about 25 feet or 8 metres from the router but does have a concrete wall in the way.

Unfortunately the printer appears to be connecting to this repeater as it behaves erratically, as do the front door cameras, which is a big problem as they are not being seen by the network.

I am fairly limited to locations to place the RE220, due to lack of power sockets. I have tried an RE200 in its place with the same issues, I have also set up the second extender between the router and the first extender, but the first extended still says too far.

The irony is that there is an old extender 4metres away and through three concrete walls which can see the router's signal and just about works, but I would prefer if it used the stronger signal from the mesh.

My questions:

1. Why has this now become a problem? has there been an upgrade recently?

2. How do I get the two REs to work with each other

3. How do I get the REs to pick up a weak signal as well as other wifi devices?

Thank you

Philip

(Please do not give me a link on how to set up a range extender - I set up my first company network in 1992, so I do understand how they work.)

Q. Can I use more than 1 range extender in the house? Can I connect a wifi extender to another wifi extender?

A.Yes, we recommend having 1-2 range extenders in one network for better performance.

It is not very recommended wirelessly connecting one range extender to another for the performance of the second extender.

Recommended topology: If you have more than one range extender, please make sure that the range extenders are both connecting to the host router's Wi-Fi network directly.

Other network topologies: or you could wire one of the Range Extenders to the front end(router or RE1) and use it in AP mode for best performance .This requires one of the range extender supports AP mode.

How to place your RE for optimal reception and performance - here.

It's the wireless device decision to connect to one or another wireless network (to the router or the RE) - picking a weaker or stronger wireless signal.

Thanks for your reply, I have tried setting the RE220 to AP (Access Point) mode.   This is not easy, I couldn't find the option in Tether and had to log into the RE220 directly (find the IP address and put that in the Browser as a URL).  Then to change the RE220 I went into Settings > Quick Setup and then ht the 'Railway-like icon' in the top right corner to get into Change Mode.

You can toggle between Access Point Mode and Range Extender Mode - so I chose Access Point Mode.  The extender rebooted and when it came back it was no longer on the Mesh, showing as a completely new WiFi network.

So yes I can set up Router > RE220 (AP)  > RE200 but not as a Mesh network using the same network name.

Is there a way of getting further distance on my network using:  Router > RE220  > RE200 > My Devices all showing the same network name?

Phil

Your observation is correct. When in AP mode the RE can't use its mesh feature.

But you can always set the RE (in AP mode) to have the same SSID as your mesh network.

Another approach would be to use RE315 v1 which supports Easyemesh with an ethernet backhaul - details.

Thus you can run a cable and connect the RE315 as an Easyemsh satellite without reducing its wireless bandwidth.

Keep in mind that to be able to set this up your main router should support Easymesh with an ethernet backhaul too - details.(AX12 doesn't yet).
