I have a Powerline 8630 kit I purchased a few years back. All working well. I'd like to add another Powerline extender. I get the impression the 8630 models have been discontinued. Is there any model that I can add as an extension to this network now, for example the 8631?

Yes, you can consider adding a new TL-WPA8631P which is also 8 series. Please see the FAQ to add a new extender:
