Background:

This post provides a configuration guide on configuring the Content Filter function.

Content Filter is a new feature in URL Filter. It is based on the database instead of the domain wildcards that you used to depend on. This would greatly improve your config experience with the URL Filter.  A quick and easy way to make it happen with a few clicks.

This Article Applies to:

  • It requires both adaptations. If you're not on the proper router firmware and controller version, the function is not available.
  • Omada routers with Content Filter capability. (Some models don't support this feature.)
  • The controller is required to be V5.15.20.X or above.

Configuration Steps:

1. Go to the Controller page. Go to Settings.

2. Configure the rule based on your demand.

3. In this guide, we filter online shopping and social content.

4. Click Apply. The rule will take effect immediately.

Verification:

1. Test Amazon and Gmail services.

2. Google service is still normal as it is not included.

Note:

1. Configuration steps for Standalone mode are similar.

2. Please note that this will involve an adapted firmware, not just a controller update. Firmware development is a complex process, and timelines may change. Therefore, we cannot provide a specific release date at this time. Please stay tuned to future firmware release notes for updates.

3. When introducing a feature like this, we typically apply it uniformly across all models to ensure consistency and a seamless user experience.

However, it's essential to acknowledge that hardware limitations may exist, which might prevent us from adding the feature to certain models. In such cases, we cannot provide individual notifications explaining the reason. Please note that we cannot guarantee the fulfillment of all requests, and we must set clear expectations upfront.

4. Some models do not have plans to support this feature. This is a hardware limit.

Known models:

ER605 (varients models)

ER706W

ER706W-4G

ER7212PC

5. This feature is based on the database. The firmware update will update the database as well. If you see the rule is ineffective when the website (domain) you block has changed, it is acceptable and expected. Please report the domain and wait for the next firmware release.

@Clive_A Thanks for this topic, i have 2 questions

1) is there a list of routers that do support this feature?

2) can the content filter databases be updated manually or via a web url?

thanks

Hi @Kyesys

Thanks for posting in our business forum.

1) There is a list of not supported. You use that list to learn about what supports it.

2) No. Written in the contents that the database update follows the firmware update.

I'm using a cloud controller, i could not see the feature on it.
Will this be rolling out onto the cloud controller soon?

I am not responsible for the controller and aware of any updates on the controller. You should ask this on the controller page.

Commonly, on-premise controller updates are prior to the cloud.

  @Clive_A

Thanks for clarifying that. In your post, it only mentioned 'controller' and didn't specify any particular type of controller.
Are you referring to an OC200, OC300, software or cloud version? Or what kind of controller did you enable the content filtering in your post?

Put it this way. I could not see the content filtering you showed in this post on my router which is a ER7412-M2 v1.20 router with Firmware version 1.0.1 Build 20240719 Rel.56423.

Could you please advise how to use this feature on my router ? Thanks.

There are two main types. You can go to the Omada Cloud platform to learn about the difference. Cloud and Essential are the first type. Rest are the second.

And this has been written in the first place. The release note also writes about the support to this feature or not. This batch of early access has not included your model yet.

Hi Clive,  @Clive_A

Thanks for your prompt response. my understanding of the following in your post is contradictory to what you said. I thought those 4 models do not support the content filtering function due to the hardware limit.

The word 'known models' is obscure as to whether they support or not support, and with the context, i would think those are not supported. I would also think ER7412-M2 has better hardware than the ER605 based on the specs on TP link website and hence make sens the ER7412-M2 does support content filter while the lower end model does not.

'4. Some models do not have plans to support this feature. This is a hardware limit.

Known models:

ER605 (varients models)

ER706W

ER706W-4G

ER7212PC'

This is a new feature which is provided by the pre-release firmware.

These listed models will NEVER receive an update to support that pre-built content filter in the URL filter because of their hardware limitations.

I don't know which is not clear enough. That is, if you don't have this feature, you wait for the firmware update. Which is why I wrote the "Apply to".

"Known" means that I have received a notice beforehand that these four models are not gonna receive this support. And it also indicates that I don't guarantee anyone on any platform about this, whether it has a new change by the dev team or PM. Because I am only "aware/know" these four models. If there is a change, I will change this note without notice.

For users who own these models I listed, do not hold high expectations for this. It is not gonna be implemented for them.

There is no new firmware for your model. Consequently, this function is not available to you. That's the whole conclusion and story for now.

And everything is finalized by the release note. Not by me. I am only making a disclaimer, and I don't guarantee or provide any ETA for a firmware release or a feature implementation.
