Hey everyone,

I'm completely stuck trying to open a single port on my TP-Link Archer MR600 router. I've tried everything I can think of, and I'm hoping someone here might spot what I'm missing.

Here’s what I’ve done so far:

  • I confirmed with my ISP that no ports are blocked — they’ve assured me everything is open on their end.

  • I have a public static IP address.

  • I am not using an LTE connection — this is a wired WAN setup.

  • I tried port forwarding multiple times with different ports and protocols.

  • I disabled the router's firewall entirely — still no luck.

  • I also tried keeping the firewall enabled but creating explicit allow rules.

  • I tested from both Windows 11 and Linux (Steam OS), same results on both.

  • I disabled the firewalls on both Windows 11 and Steam OS, and also tried adding allow rules — still no difference.

  • I’ve rebooted the router between changes and verified the rules are in place.

  • DMZ enabled sorts no effect whatsoever.

  • If I try to ping my IP from the outside, it works just fine, so the public IP is accessible.

Despite all this, the port never appears open from the outside (checked with canyouseeme.org and similar tools). Nothing seems to get through.

Has anyone dealt with this on the MR600 or similar routers? Is there some hidden setting I might be missing?

Hi, if you test the current internet IP address via https://whatismyipaddress.com/, is it the same as the "public static IP address" on the Archer MR600?

And what is the model number of the front ISP modem/gateway?

Hi,

 

yes - WAN ip matches public static IP

 

 

and there's no other modem device. Archer MR600 is the only modem/router in my home network.

  @laserbak On what device are you trying to do the port forward to and for what purpose? Maybe that will be useful information.

Hi, 

 

It is a Windows 11 machine. Tried also on linux (Steam deck) with same results...

 

Purpose is to open 27960 UDP and host Quake Live matches...

 

 

I add something:

 

UPnP works. My DVR is opening 53347 TCP and I can see that port is open. Plex media server opens I think 32400 TCP and also that one is open.

 

But manually... I can't open nothing.

Some screens of the router settings... maybe can help.

 

All this ports can be pinged from outside and they are opened:

 

NAT Boost is on

 

Adding a virtual server does not help

Adding a rule in Port Triggering does not help

DMZ on or off does not help, yes I pointed at main PC and also at Steam Deck to test, no luck

 

4G is on backup mode:

 

 

Internet settings:

 

DHCP is on

Main desktop PC (Windows 11) has static ip

Steam deck (Linux) has static ip

 

 

 

I don't know what else to try... do I really have to replace my modem/router?

Why it can't just open ports, as it is supposed to?  sad

  @laserbak Can you telnet to port 27960 of the internal IP of your Windows 11 machine from another device?

 

e.g.:

 

telnet 192.168.1.42 27960

 

(replace 192.168.1.42 with the IP.)

 

If there is a connection the screen will go blank and show just a flashing cursor.

Hi,

 

tried now.. with virtual server rule, with port triggering rule, with no windows 11 firewall, with rule in the firewall

 

In any case:

 

It says "trying...." for about 10 seconds, then reports connection timed out

Hi, did you also test whether the hosted Quake Live server can be accessed from the local devices?

I'll also follow up on your case via email and consult the engineer for further assistance.

Please also check whether you can receive my email later.

 

PS: The official firmware has closed the telnet protocol, and it is normal that there is no response when telnetting a local device.

Hi, thank you - yes, I've received the e-mail.

 

Yes - Quake Live server can be accessed locally. I have recently (2 weeks ago) hosted a lan party and we were able to play with no issue whatsoever.

 

Although, I believe that Quake Live behaves differently in local - here are a couple screenshots - to play in lan, you must select "lan" and the server is ONLY local.

 

Internet:

 

LAN (no warning about opening ports)
