Model: Deco X60
Hardware Version: V3
Firmware Version: 1.3.0 Build 20240830 Rel. 50008

Hi,

I have a x60 mesh environment that I used for about 2 and half years without issues.
During the last week, I started encountering several disconnections per day, every day.

I have a main x60 unit, router mode, connected directly to the network cable from my ISP and a second unit connected through a ethernet backhaul.

While talking with the techical support from my ISP, they instructed me to disconnect the router from their cable and instead connect a laptop to their network cable. The laptop immediately connected and indicated internet access. After this test I moved the network cable back to the router and it also reconnected and the network indication light turned from red to green..

Since that call with the ISP, I already encountered 10-15 disconnections which can be hours long of disconnection and in all cases doing the trick with switching the cable to the laptop and back to the router fixed the problem (until the next disconnection).
Interestingly, just rebooting the router does not help restoring the network connectivity.

I tried switching the roles of the nodes from the deco app, making the secondary node main and connecting it directly to the ISP network cable but I am still encountering the same issues. Also tried to disconnect the second x60 node, so their will be only one device on the network didn't help.

Another thing I noticed is that while the internet access is disconnected, also the internal local network is not availble. As long as the network light indicator is red, locally connected devices cannot connect, actually even pinging wired connected devices on the local network is failing.

The error occurred around the hour 22:20.

I am attaching logs from the latest disconnection.

Thanks for any assistance!

  @Lesc7

Hi, thank you very much for your time and patience.

The following network topology should work well:

I saw a similar post of Deco X60 with 1.3.0, and the user here(X5000 is a similar model of Deco X60) mentioned the issue started just after the 1.3.0 firmware update. whle his model was set into AP mode, though.

https://community.tp-link.com/us/home/forum/topic/804184

As your reported issue also started suddenly, I wonder if it is also firmware-related.

Are there any differences after cloning the MAC address and fixing the WAN port?

Wait for your reply.

Best regards.

  @Lesc7

Thank you very much for the feedback.

It is suggested to refer to this link to clone the MAC address of the laptop to see whether it helps:

How to Configure MAC Clone on Deco

Deco X60_1.3.0 should support fixing WAN port and it is also suggested to fix the Ethernet port connected to the ISP as the WAN port on the Deco APP.

How to set a fixed WAN Port on your Deco

By the way, can I have a picture of your network layout? Apart from the satellite X60, what are the other devices that are also connected to the main Deco via Ethernet cables?

for example:

ISP cable from the wall----main Deco X60----network switch--satellite Deco X60

                                                                                  \------------other wired devices(the model numbers are ?)

if there is a switch behind the main Deco X60, when its LED turns red again, you can unplug the switch first, then restart the main Deco once to see whether the internet connection can be restored.

Wait for your reply.

Best regards.

@David-TP - thanks for you reply.

I will try your suggestions and I'll update.

Regarding the network layout, I'll describe it, but I want to emphasize that the current network layout hasn't changed and it ran flawlessly for more than 2 years.

ISP cable from the wall----main Deco X60---TP Link LS10008G unmanaged network switch ---- secondary Deco X60 --- TP Link LS10008G unmanaged network switch --- several desktop PCs and 1 Lenovo Laptop

I have another input following a test I did today to ensure that the ISP is not the root cause of the network disconnections.

I connected to the ISP network cable an old TP-Link router (N600) that I had at home and was not in use, instead of the main Deco x60 unit.

Using the old router, I had no disconnections, the old router remained connected the whole day. At same later point, I connected one of the output LAN ports of the old N600 router to the main Deco x60. Originally, the X60 immediately connected and the light indicator turned green. However, within a few hours once again the Deco x60 main turned red and disconnected from the N600 local network. So these x60 disconnections occur even when I connected to a nearby router and not to a real ISP / WAN.

Does this make any sense?

Thanks again for your assistance.

  @David-TP

Hi David,

Returning to you on this subject.

No, cloning the MAC address and fixing the WAN port did not help.

However, I noticed that if I remove the switch that was connected between the 2 Deco units and instead I connect the switch after the second unit (the Deco units are connected directly using network cable), the network will drop after some time and led will turn red in both units (it can be after several minutes or several hours).

INTERNET----Deco Main ---- cat6 cable--- Deco Sat. --- LS10008G---- several laptops

If I don't connect the switch to the sat. unit, and I use only wifi and the single free port from the Deco sat unit to connect the laptops, than the network is stable.

Alternatively if I completely remove the Deco sat and use the switch connected through the cat6 cable directly to the Main Deco, again the network is stable, but obviously I lose the wifi coverage provided by the second Deco unit.

When the network drops, all the switch leds are blinking synchronously, which is indicating a network loop storm has occurred.

Also the following topology failed to work:

INTERNET----Deco Main ---- cat6 cable--- LS10008G---- LS10008G--- several laptops

                                                                                                            ---- Deco Sat.

Thank you for your help!

The TP-Link LS1008G is an unmanaged switch and therefore does not have loop prevention features, but they recommenced an unmanaged switch for Ethernet backhaul. If you don't care about having Ethernet backhaul you could try a managed switch with loop prevention?

Need help with the Deco app, setup, Ethernet backhaul, network switch or rolling back firmware? Router or AP mode? https://community.tp-link.com/us/home/forum/topic/699816?page=1

Thanks   @HelpFixDecoApp ,

Ethernet backhaul is important as the 2 units are separated by several walls and wireless connection is not a real option.
I considered purchasing a managed switch to replace the unmanaged but than I noticed that the recommendation for TP link Deco is indeed to use unmanaged switches.

Don't understand why a switch connected after the second unit causes those network drops.
