What is Connect Manually in PPPOA/PPPOE mode?

What is Connect Manually in PPPOA/PPPOE mode?
Model : TD-8817
In Interface Setup → Internet section when select PPPOA/PPPOE radio button there is a section called 'connection' and have another radio button with three option:
Always On (Recommended)
Connect On-Demand (Close if idle forminutes)
Connect Manually
I want to know what is Connect Manually and how can I connect manually in Linux/Windows?
User guide checked but there is no any explanation about that!
